Recent GL surgery

I'm a 66 year old male who except for BPH in reasonably good health (could stand to lose about 10 pounds though). My BPH symptoms started to get noticeable about 6 years ago. Over the course of about 4 years the frequent urination was for the most part taken care of by taking a 5mg dose of Daily Cialis. Then the symptoms started to get worse...dripping. a couple of small accidents here and there. My PCP got me on Tamsulosin .4mg once a day (along with the daily Cialis. Things got better again for about a year or so. But then after a brief period of worsening symptoms I noticed that I was not getting up as much overnight...maybe once a night and during the day it seemed like the urges were less frequent. But after a couple of months something didn't seem right and I always seem a little bloated. So back in June I went to see a new Urologist. He did a bladder scan, etc and told me that in addition to BPH I also had a weakened bladder and that I was retaining about 350 or so ml of liquid. At my age he said 125-150 ml would be acceptable. He kinda scared the crap out of me about what might happen if I ignored this...but in a good way as it turns out. He put me on a double dose of Tamsulosin (along with staying on Daily Cialis). He had me come back later in the month (about 4 weeks) to see if there was any improvement which there wasn't. He then placed an indwelling catheter in me and scheduled me for GL surgery. I had to wait almost four weeks for that (due to back ups in day surgery due to Covid). At the end of July I had the surgery and was in and out of the hospital in about 5 hours. I went home with another catheter (this was on a Friday) and was given my post op instructions along with instructions to remove the catheter on the Monday after the surgery. Removing the catheter was easy with just a little discomfort. I had no problems with voiding and my stream was moderate to strong with some bleeding at the start of the voiding. Later that day I went back for a followup appointment. A bladder scan indicated that I only had 80ml in the bladder...very happy! I was told to continue with the Tamsulosin till my refilll ran out (this week). For the time after my followup my stream has gotten even stronger and I seem to voiding most of the fluid I take in during a 24 hour period. I'm drinking about 2-3 liters a day. The bleeding (which only lasted for a second or two at the start of voiding stopped earlier this week. At times there is a little discomfort during the middle or end of voiding but I certainly couldn't call it pain (knock on wood). I've been getting up about once a night for the past two weeks to void and then again first thing in the morning. Generally the overnight void is about 400-450 ml. The voids in the first part of the day are less but then build as I drink more fluid. Some days I still feel an urge to pee in between voids but I believe that is more due to inactivity and force of habit. Right now I pee about every 2-2.5 hours (sometimes a little less sometime a little longer in between). I will probably cut down on my fluid intake to about 1.5 ml after I visit my Urologist again in about 10 days. Keeping my fingers crossed but everything seems to be going well.

I hope all goes well for you but I feel that the doctor scared you into a procedure. Did you get a second opinion before you agreed to having it done. At your age he told you that you should have no more then 125 to 150 ml. I'm sorry but all men are different. I'm 66 if I have 50 ml lift that is good for me. And I have a defected kidney that sits on my bladder. I had a Urolift done 8 years ago and still open.

I do not think you were doing that bad. You were still peeing during the day and you were not getting up at night. So you were a little bloated. All men get that one time or another.

I just hope you did not rush into anything that is going to mess up the rest of your life. Good luck to you

    Fingers cross.....Ken

He might have thrown a little scare into me but considering that on 2 different visits I was retaining anywhere from 300-450 ml after voiding it was not a good situation. And yes my bladder muscles were weakening. The size of my prostate was as follows:

      Length: 4.9

      Height: 4.3

      Width: 5.7cm

      Volume: 63 grams

      Urethral length:3.9cm

      Findings:

hypoechoic lesions: 9mm LT medial mid hypoechoic region

      calcifications: Minimal

      Seminal Vesicles- Normal

      median lobe: PROMINENT MLH

Overall it's now been about 9 weeks since my surgery and I'm quite pleased. Peeing like I was 30 again. Getting up a night only once (and more out of force of habit...I'm a light sleeper). Having had mild to moderate ED before the surgery I was worried about RE. But even though I am experiencing RE I have to say that my erections are harder and firmer than they were before (possibly as good as my mid to late 40s). Also the orgasm is different but good...There is more enjoyment leading up to the orgasm too. I have some pre cum as before the operation and lately a small (dime size) amount of cum (especially if I don't prolong sex for too long). All in all I'm very pleased.

As long as you are happy and can deal with the side effect. You are the only one that has to deal with it

      All the best Ken
