Recent oopherectomy

in June my doctor removed one ovary and both fallopian tubes. i had terrible endometriosis. i went into immediate menopause. I'm 49 so I'm not far off from it anyway, but i had only occasionally experienced hot flashes and terrible mood swings and as a result, my doctor put me on 200mg of progesterone 9 months ago to help with this. there was marked improvement. after the surgery i immediately started having hot flashes. more of a nuisance then anything. But i also couldn't sleep more then 2 hours at a time. after 6 weeks of this i visited my gyn doctor and she ran blood work. it came back showing i had no estrogen and my TSH was .2. i was hyperthyroid 27 years ago and had it ablated but then the thyroid grew into a 5cm goiter. so 3 years ago the thyroid was removed. interestingly, my endocrinologist doesn't want to change my synthroid unless i start to have anxious symptoms. the gyn did want to increase my progesterone to 300 mg even though my progesterone levels were within the normal range. so i have been on 300 mg of progesterone for 2 weeks and i am sleeping better and the hot flashes are half of what they were but still fairly frequent. these last two days I've started feeling a little bluesy though. since my surgery I've experienced an incredible amount of energy, joy and a sense of peace. i feel like a different person! but now that my progesterone had been increased and I'm not on any estrogen I'm getting a little concerned that things might be regressing. I'm not sure if i should give estrogen a try or not. that's my bottom line problem. that and should i have my endocrinologist change my synthroid? I'm not anxious. which is a miracle because before the surgery I've battlesd anxiety for years and if my tsh numbers dropped anywhere close to 1.0 i was really anxious. now I'm at .2! so..... that was a lot. sorry. I'd appreciate anyone's feedback.

    Hi Sindy,

I am confused as to why your ob/gyn won't prescribe estrogen seeing that they tested your levels and they are non existant. I would think that if you added it you may find you feel more balanced as both estrogen and progesterone should work together to mimic how our bodies work.

I have read that progesterone can cause depression and weepiness at high levels so you may want to consider backing off the dosage and possibly adding melatonin and magnesium to help your sleep.

Oestradiol replaces oestrogen, not progesterone. Actually I find it rather amazing that you were feeling so well with that much progesterone - it usually causes all sorts of problems, and only a small amount is required to protect your uterus.

Perhaps your body is turning some progesterone into oestrogen - check out a graph that shows the progress of hormones. As it appears to be not working so well now, then look at adding oestradiol in some form - patches, or pellet implants. Gel is good too but must be applied daily. Your remaining ovary may have been working for a while too, but may be tiring off now because of your age.

Your dr sounds like he/she has some bias against oestrogen so you might have to be assertive, or move on.

Don't mess with your thyroid medication if it is working for you too.
