I'm 42 and as far as I know am not going through menopause yet...I had a fall last week and injured myself resulting in an x ray on my spine.. nothing was broken but the Dr told me the x ray showed crumbling of my spine and told me I have osteoporosis. I saw my gp today but he told me flat out I can't have it I'm too young and you can't see things like that on an x ray, then gave me yet more cocodamol.I do suffer with a lot of back pain..my last visit to the gp they told me i had a bulging disc..I'm very very confused no one has even thought about arranging for any kind of scan / MRI for me. I feel quite stranded and worried about my job.

    Dear Julie

Please keep on to your gp or diffinatley a different one,I'm a 47 year old male which is even less common to having op, so your age shouldn't come into it, and as for him saying you can't see a crumbling spine on an xray what absolute rubbish,I have the same and I've seen my own xray and you can diffinatley see it,I guess I was lucky my gp sent me for a bone density scan, so just keep going back until your happy in what they are doing for you.

I agree with being able to see it on an xray....  that's how my dr. first detected mine...  and sent me for a Dexa from there.....

A couple of people have said that...I was surprised at my GPS lack of consideration especially as he's a really good gp and very respected... he just bluntly said 'no you can't see osteoporosis on an x ray and your too young to have it ' even after I pointed out that I took epilepsy meds for over ten years and have very low calcium intake also had a bad spinal injury 19 years ago..but he was adamant.

Yes and I'm surprised that he doesn't know that younger people get it, too.  When I was diagnosed 24 years ago, it WAS rare for younger people to have it....  But, that was 24 years ago!  It is much more common now...

He contradicted himself a bit he then told me he doesn't really know it as extensively as his wife who is also a gp there and told me to make an appointment with her to do an online test with her???

It's much more common for younger people to be diagnosed with osteoporosis now because in the last decade or two the drug companies have gone into overdrive, trying to recruit patients who are "candidates" for their risky offerings.

I was surprised too... maybe he was having an off day..he didn't even ask any questions or try to get copies of my x ray
