Recently diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency

Hi I have recently been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency after years of pain and tiredness. I have quite a long history but have had surgery twice on my right foot. The first time was a straght forward bunion op and the second one I am now wondering if was caused by Vit D Deficiency as I was in so much pain after first op I needed the 2/3/4 metatarsals cuttings and replacing into different positions.
I also have Carpel Tunnel in right hand and been told I need surgery on it due to muscle waste, inflamed tendons and slight loss of sensation.
There isn't a part of my body that doesn't hurt and I am a 36 year old female. I am self employed and a mum (which can be very challenging with all the pain and tiredness at times!).
I have been prescribed pre d3 20,000 iu 3 times a week.
It turns out that I had a blood test in 2011 that showed I was low on vit d then so I have spent the past week battling between my GP and hospital to try get the levels and find out who did the original test and find out why nothing was done years ago for me. I am starting to feel fobbed off as no one is giving me a clear answer. The hospital won't give me the answers and told me they have to be faxed to GP which I asked for and after waiting days for this and chasing up twice the GP rang today to tell me they have recent blood test result which showed vit D below 30 if that makes sense to anyone?
They weren't sent the 2011 results so have had to chase up again!
I am concerned after having pain for years that this may have done damage. How long does it take to see a difference on that doseage?
My main pains are in lower right back, back right rib, hips, feet, hands, neck.
It would be great to hear from anyone else with vitamin D defiancy.

I have had your same symptoms including seizures, bi-polar diagnosis, and 2 positive Lyme disease tests. I was diagnosed 9 months ago level 13. I took 50,000 iu weekly and 2,000 iu daily after 3 months level rose to 18. Then took 50,000 iu twice weekly and 2,000 iu daily for and additional 3 months. (Felt a little better here) next level was 25. Doctor then put me back to the original 50,000 iu weekly and 2,000 iu daily. After 2 months I started feeling pain, fatigue again. Went back to Dr. and was now at 20. Lost 5 in 2 months. Had been being treated for the last 2 months for ringworm because I developed circular raised red patches on my arms and neck. Finally got an ANA test done which came back positive. Now heading back to the rheumatologist to see what's up.

Oh hell.
Sounds just like my story!
How damn hard is it to test for D vitamin?
I've suffered way to long because of inept medical facilities!
How did you ever end up?

maureen65564...Believe it or not, there are differences in Vitamin D levels. Severe deficiency is one thing, while INSUFFICIENT is another.
My level was at 62 whereas the reference range is 75-250 nmol/L.,
so you see, I don't have that far to go to get the numbers back into the reference range. I live in Canada, so many months of the year we don't get the sunshine that helps keep Vitamin D at good levels. Vitamin D deficiency is very very common. My level is considered INSUFFICIENT, while <25 is DEficient. My doctor suggested taking a Vitamin D supplement at 1000 I/U (international units) per day. The Pharmacist recommended Vitamin D3 which is the norm. So, this is what I'm taking to help boost up the level. Also, the Vitamin D level is determined by a simple blood test. It's best not to just test for Vitamin D level, but key here is testing for 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D Levels.
I hope this has been helpful to you.
Be careful about vitamins. A lot of people think vitamins are harmless, which many are not, but many certainly are. Vitamin D can be toxic if too much is taken or the levels in the blood are very high. Consult your doctor before taking anything over the counter.

It's been a year now since my deficiency was discovered I feel a little better but I must say not 100% I had a bone density test and I now have osteopenia stage three, my right arm is frozen and I need therapy,. I know take more medication to make sure my bones don't break. What a nightmare, life has changed so much for me. But I know the pain everyone here endures because I'm also a victom of Vit D deficiency, I pray for everyone's recovery and may God bless you all,. Thank you for you support.

Hello !
I'm 16 years old and have very recently been diagnosed with a vit d deficency. The news was unexpected , but after three blood tests I'm glad I recieved some results ! My family keep taking the mickey out of me and keep saying I'm an old lady but I can't help the lack of sunshine I get , due to strict deadlines from my school and work lol. I have had very weak joints almost all my life and I believe they are improving !
I have to take calcichew d3 , twice a day for four months currenty which is rubbish because I really hate chewing pills and wish I could just have swallowing ones !

Hi Nic,
Calcichew tablets usually contain 200IU colecalciferol (vitamin D) per tablet, meaning if you take one twice a day you will receive a weekly dose of 2800IU. Vit D deficiency is usually treated with 40000 to 60000IU per week - quite a difference.
You may wish to do the following things:
check the dosage per tablet (in case you are on a higher dose version than I have quoted)
Ask your doctor if your D level is in the range of 'insufficiency' or actual 'deficiency' (usually less than 30nmol/L of 25(OH)D)
If you are indeed in the deficienct range, ask your physician if he or she has a particular reason to put you on such a low dose. Deficiency is usually treated with a much higher dose and you run the risk of taking a long, long time to raise your blood levels of 25(OH)D/vit D in taking a modest dose, lengthening the time for your body to recover and your bones to strengthen (Vit D mediates bone building and density Vs bone destruction and porosity among other things).
I wouldn't advise that you raise your dose without medical advice, but you might like to share this information with your parents and ask your doctor the questions above.
Wishing you well.

Hi nic - just to say I agree with everything Jaybelle has said so I won't write it again. Discuss having a higher dose with your doctor.
