Recently Had Surgery to Repair Ruptured Achilles' Tendon and am Concerned About Timelines

Hi all,

About 3 weeks ago, I fully ruptured my Achilles' playing flag football on a turf field. I made appointments with two different doctors immediately (an orthopedic surgeon and a Podiatrist/ankle and foot specialist) and opted to have surgery 6 days after the rupture occurred with the Podiatrist. One thing that stood out to me was that the two doctors seemed to differ a bit on the timelines for recovery.

I've spent hours researching how recent advancements have changed the recovery process for this injury; specifically how soon after surgery, the individual begins weight bearing and physical therapy. I have quickly become very interested in Los Angeles Rams Running Back, Cam Akers who was able to return to the NFL in less than 6 months but reportedly began PT days after his surgery.

Although I am 30 years old, I am an extremely active individual (overuse probably led to this injury now that I think about it), and I am hell bent on returning to 100% as quickly as possible. My most important goal is to resume hiking, weight lifting, and snowboarding without any complications and if possible, I'd like to play basketball again.

My doctor's timeline is a little slower and more conservative than I had anticipated and he expects me to remain in a cast for 6-7 weeks post-surgery before beginning physical therapy. Does this seem in line with anyone else's experience in more recent years where there is research to suggest that PT should begin sooner? It's most important to me that I get back to 100% as long as that takes but being in this waiting game before I am cleared to start has been very difficult and I wonder if a longer timeline could introduce new challenges.

I would love to hear about anybody else's journey with recovering from a full rupture and how they were best able to get back to doing the things that they love.
