Recently seen ENT who said I have MD

Hello All,

I am 29 years old and have been battling vertigo since March 2017. I have ear fullness and ringing, and Ive had way more bad days than good. I recently visited an ENT, and I told her my symptoms and they did a hearing test which stated that I have NO HEARING LOSS. She says its MD. My question is how common is it to have MD at 29? What other tests can be done for the right diagnosis? Ive also been to other doctors as well, and I get a different diagnosis each time. Im just here looking for advice and what to do to start feeling better.

Hi Rachel sorry to hear about your ordeals, sadly on this forum we all are going through very similar. I too have all the symptoms you’ve mentioned, but with no hearing loss, and my ENT said that that’s one of the key symptoms for MD; after each episode your hearing in the affected ear decreases. Do you experience headaches? They probably don’t last long enough (about a minute or less)to be classed as such, they come and go and you always feel like there’s a lingering headache that never goes away which makes you feel drained at the end of the day. If you do, like me you could have Vestibular Migraines or Migraneous Vertigo. Like I said the symptoms are very similar to MD except for the hearing loss. The treatment for VM is very similar to MD and the dietary changes as well. I am on Betahistine 16mg 3x a day for vertigo, dizziness and tinnitus; Amytriptalin for migraines 10mg 1 to 3 pills every night. And if I need more I have Procholperazine which I can also take up to 3x day but can’t be taken regularly like Betahistine.

Based on your symptoms, it is very possible that you have meniere's. There are other tests out there that should be done first before confirming the diagnosis.

From what I saw happen to my son, he would become extremely dizzy then start throwing up, losing his balance, could not walk without help and had to go to bed. He would take motion sickness pills and a OTC Tinnitus pill. This went on for about a month before we found a 2nd ENT that helped him.

      Hi

I believe this disease is different for everyone.  Before I have an episode I usually have a lot of ear fullness.  But other times there’s no warning.  I hits me mainly in the morning. Try to get up from bed and can’t.  I have episodes that have lasted from a few minutes to weeks.  I have had very little hearing loss.  But I have no balance, a lot of tinnitus, ear fullness and head pressure.

I too was diagnosed at 55. None of the drugs or diet suggestions helped me, but what did help was a physiotherapist who did neck adjustment, and I have not had a single vertigo episode since. I have hearing loss, which came gradually and fluctuated, but now I have almost no hearing in one ear. Still have tinnitus.

    Hi Rachel,

Don't know how common it is at your age. I did want to share with you that I started with my MD in my Forty's

It started in my left ear. Initially I had no hearing loss but did have ear fullness and tinnitus with occasional vertigo.. I noticed it did get worse when I was especially stressed out. After years of this and gradual hearing loss I was finally diagnosed with MD. I had an MRI done right away. With continued MD attacks I lost all hearing hearing and the tinnitus got worse. Now I am dealing with this in my right ear.

Please get as much info on MD as you can so you are informed and ready to present questions to the specialist you will be seeing. Start advocating for yourself early. I did not know what I was dealing with and did not know what to ask and what options I might have had at the early onset of my MD.

    Wish you the best!

    God Bless

    Luz
