Recovering from broken leg, forgotten how to walk!

Posted , 2 users are following.

I broke both my tibia and fibula at the end of may.

I had surgery, a plate and 14 screws to put my tibia back in place.

The last two weeks I have been able to weight bear up to 50% which has been going fine. I have been walking using my crutches.

Since last Thursday, I have been allowed to weight bear 100%. Only thing is, as soon as I put my crutches down and try to walk, my brain doesn't seem to compute and I'm just stood there trying to work out how to walk.

I put my bad leg (left leg) forward and then try to walk by meeting it with my right leg but its not a walk, it's like a quick stomp. I have been trying for DAYS and don't seem to be progressing.

Does anyone have any tips to how to learn to walk again? The hospital said I didn't need to go back but made an appointment for me just in case I wanted to so think I will go to that next week, they haven't scheduled me in for physio yet.

Thanks!

Hi, proper PT will help you walk. i was in cast for 3 months and NWB for another 1.5 months, partial WB for another 1.5 months. its been 2 months i have started walking but with the limp. I feel pain, irritation, swelling after walking some distance. but i am happy to be on my feet again. this was possible only with proper follow-up and PT. my doctor says it can take anything between 1-2 years to attain full recovery.

Wish you good luck for speedy recovery!!

hey thank you for your reply! i am now at the same stage you are. i am now walking and can do most of what i used to, but with a limp as it hurts still and irritates my foot and ankle. its been 5 months since my injury now but PT have not been in touch and have been informed there is a long waiting list which really sucks as i feel i am not making progress until that happens
