Recovering from my 4th pancreatitis

Posted , 3 users are following.

just out of hospital where I stayed 8 days on IV . This is my 4th attack . 1st one in 2005 , then 2014 (mild stayed home), 2015 gallbladder removal by pure prevaution since I never had issues nor stones. So after this I wasnt supposed to get another one, but I did last May, 5 days in hospital with acute pancreatitis. I dont smoke nor drink any alcool, exercise daily with healthy diet. Finally specialist decided to do ERCP to see what was the problem. I had dysfunction of Sphincter of Oddi , DR had to prob and make incision. 3 AM had to rush to ER with acute pancreatitis AGAIN with Lipases level of 17700! Apparently with ERCP and SOD problems my risks to get another attack was 45%. Cross fingers I will never have to go thru this again!

At home now but still some pain and aches and bloating . Any one had same experience?

Sorry to say, but this sounds about right. The bile keeps backing up due to your problem with the physical structure. You will likely continue to have attacks.

I'm afraid I don't know what surgical options are for Sphincter of Oddi. Possibly a sphincterotomy? Did your GI suggest a course of treatment? What "incision" did they make??

    So sorry this is happening...

according to DR the sphinteroctomy he did (2 mm incision) on Sphincter of Oddi and cleaning it ( deposits of crystals from bile) should do the trick and I shouldn't have more attacks. All my ducts were clear. Not 100% convinced as SOD comes often after gallbladder removal (4 years ago) and I HAD 2 attacks prior to removal. My instinct and belief is that all this is caused by the microscopic crystals they found previously in my bile. Any one knows how to disolve these crystals ? Ursodiol won't work on my cholesterol crystals? Getting better everyday on a very strict diet of non fat low sugar and 5 mini meals a day. Thank you for yr reply .

my son was diagnosed in 2018 with an acute episode of pancreatitis he was not hospitalized. his numbers went down but never went down to normal levels prior to his next episode 3 months later. He had several mri , ultrasounds and eventually had an eus. They found nothing. He followed up and had genetic studies also, again nothing. . After all of this his numbers were notmal and he has been doing great for over 1 year. 1 month ago another attack. The gi doctor wants his gall bladder out bit when we went to the surgeon they said they would like us to follow up with another specialist prior to the removal. We went to Baylor he is following up with up with a dr there and he is scheduled for another eus with a possible ercp. The dr at baylor said he wants the gall bladder out after. we are hopeful that the dr will see something and is able to correct the problem. he also mentioned that if he sees a stricture he can put a stent in during the ercp.

have to ask. did this acute pancreatitis occur after your ercp? asking because pancreatitis can occur as a complication after the procedure.
