I am having MUA in 2 1/2 weeks. I have had this shoulder pain since April. Have had OT, Chiropratic, Cortisone injections, etc thru the VA. I have 10% range of motion on my dominant arm. Walk with a cane with my right hand. After being sent to ortho, I am told I have a frozen shoulder. I am extremely anxious about this procedure and what will happen immediately following this procedure. Will my husband need to take time off to assist me? Can't seem to get any straight answers as to what to expect in the week following MUA. Can anyone answer?

I spent 2 days in my sling, the pain was horrible, but it did get better. I started physio a week later, although I've read that you're supposed to start the following day.

My range of motion gradually increased after 5 days in a row of intensive physio.

I wound up needing another cortisone shot, but the next day I already felt an improvement.

I stopped physio last week, and while I still have pain, my range of motion is at about 80%. I was told that this was as much as I would get, and I'm OK with it.

I had a slap repair done in February, diagnosed with frozen shoulder in April. Had an mua done in June, and the extra cortisone last month.

My surgeon did the mua early on because I'm having ankle surgery next week, and need to be on crutches for 6 weeks.

      Good luck with your mua.

I had an MUA last April. I had Physio every day for 5 weeks and 3 times a week for around 4 months after.

I was in a sling for 2 days and needed someone with me the day after anaesthetic. It was my dominant arm but I managed to muddle through things on my own.

I think that it's not without its own pain and recovery but nothing like the pain of FS itself.

I'm glad I had it done as I felt it shortened the life of FS.

Hi Sheri I'm one day post surgery for capsule release and mua, the Dr did a full anaesthetic block on my shoulder so I woke up with no pain I had surgery at 10am and only had slight amount of pain at 10pm, at 1am had a substantial amount of jabbing pain and was given Endone. Im home now and hardly any pain, i haven't needed pain killer's. Im starting physiotherapy hopefully in the next few days, I'm out of my sling and trying slowly to do some rotation exercises.

See how long did you have it before surgery? What was cause? Thanks for your advise I'm really struggling with decision the surgery scheduler has been calling but I just can't even return the call to depressed

I had it for four months it was caused by having a rotator cuff tear, I was a week past the freezing stage and into the frozen stage, I'd way rather surgery than waiting it out too heal on it's own.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

How did you know you were a week into frozen and out of frozen? MRI?

Because the pain had totally gone, the only pain I had was if I tried to extend my ROM

It sucks that people don't understand just how bad this is.  I have been dealing with adhesive capsulitis for approximately 19 months now.  I have had 4 cortisone shots (2 were ultrasound guided) and I am scheduled in 6 days for MUA.  I am so scared of the pain I will be in immediately following the MUA but I am willing to go through it to get some relief long term.

The pain after the mua isn't really that bad, not like surgery. I had mine done in June.

I had surgery in February. I got stuck in March and knew it was frozen shoulder. Diagnosed in April, follow-up in June.

My surgeon didn't want to wait and booked me in for the mua the following week. It worked for a while, but I felt the scar tissue building up again.

I had a cortisone injection in July, a desperate move since I had ankle surgery coming up in August.

After that surgery, I was up on crutches and I felt my shoulder give out on me. I don't know what's going on, but I'll find out on Monday. I feel grinding in my shoulder.

You'll be fine, don't worry too much about it.

Alison I am 2 months out of surgery for capsular release, manipulation, and acromioplasty(shaved bone for impingement). I highly recommend surgery.  It was painful for the first 2 days after my block wore off but meds controlled it.  The worst part for me was the PT(6 weeks) but it was worth it!  My ROM is about 80% and no more excruciating pain! Only occasional soreness and throbbing after I have overdone it. Can now sleep on that side😌  I am a happy camper! Good luck!!

Pain after mua isn't that bad. ( and I'm a wimp ) they kept warning me to keep up with pain meds which I did but was not as bad as they made it seem like it would be. I took 1 Percocet every 6 hours or so for a few weeks. For me two days after the procedure I had the most pain but the Percocet made it totally ok. Also mua was totally worth it cause immediately got back a lot of range of motion and overall Pain level went down. ( I could get shirts on and off without dying , make a pony tail in my hair ) good luck

I did mua a few months ago and am finally almost 100%. Just thought the Toronto thing sounded interesting.

Don't worry about pain after mua. I am a wimp and immediately wS in less pain after mua then before. I did need to take pain meds but they helped whereas before they really didn't and I could finally get some sleep. Mua was the best thing I did. Now almost five months later I am almost 100 percent

I had frozen shoulder after having a sub-scapular tear surgery in June of this year. I had debridement and MUA 5 weeks ago.  Am going to PT 2x/wk and will now begin once every other week.  When my therapist measures my arm above my head straight back with pushing, it measures 170 out of 180 degrees. The elbow internal and external rotations are not as mobile, but slowly getting there.  I am FAITHFUL in doing my exercises every day, including bands, weights, and a pull-up bar.  I was wondering if anyone had any information on how many months TOTAL it took you to get back to 90-100%.

It's been a few months and recovery from ankle surgery is full of complications. My surgeon screwed up and has caused permanent damage in my foot.

As for my shoulders, I had an ultrasound done on both shoulders earlier in the month. The frozen shot has returned in my right shoulder, and I have degenerative bone disease in both shoulders.

I need another mua, but my surgeon wants to get my ankle issues sorted out first. He took on my ankle issues as a second opinion, and will take over from the surgeon who screwed me up.

I now have to see another neurologist and now a rheumatologist due to an unconfirmed diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis in my foot.

I have ulnar nerve entrapment in my right arm, the lousy neurologist I've seen has basically said I need to stop bending my arms or I'll need a translocation surgery.

This surgery will be more of a priority as I'm starting to show signs of muscle wasting in my hand. I was told that surgery would be definite because of that.

So that's my problems. I don't know when I'll have the next mua, and I don't know if I'll react to the cortisone again or not.

Hi Kathy I think everyone recovers differently depending on the width of the adhesions mine was 6 times the thickness of what it should be, I had ACR and MUA 3 months ago and my arm going straight up is at 125 to the side is 115 and with my arm bent and raising similar to how you put deodorant on is 85 it is going to be a long road as I have now plateaued. Physiotherapy has dropped to every 2 weeks and exercising at home. Just a waiting game now

Hello i had a MUA on my right shoulder 7 days ago and the pain is escalating daily. It is worse now then before and i feel like im losing rom. i am losing my mind with this roller coaster ride. Have you gotten anywhere?

Had first shoulder surgery Nov 6, repair rotator cuff, repair hole in labrum and reattached bicep with fibre screws. 6 weeks in sling no movement terrible pain then started therapy 3x a week after few weeks they realized it was frozen with adhesions. Scheduled my surgery for 6 weeks later and told to stop therapy. April 25, back in took out knot of scar tissue and cut adhesions. Started therApy next day, 3x week again. Some better, not a lot. Still can't lift it chest high on my own. Oh yeah forgot after 1st surgery couple weeks later my dr put me on Lyrica for nerve pain, didn't help, almost killed me actually! Kidneys shut down etc. I had to retire a year earlier than I want last week, and hoping to get SS disability, tomorrow actually is my phone interview then a physical later. Lawyer says I should get it no problem because these were my 15 & 16 surgeries total for long list of health issues. Had 4 back fusions, stomach surgery, part of intestines removed etc, first shoulder surgery by far the worst of any I've had!!! Hope your health issues get better.

Hi so the MUA is worth it? I'm going crazy with this shoulder and my surgeon has just offered me a MUA in a weeks time, how long is the recovery? I haven't been able to brush my hair in 4 months, or get dressed by myself, feel totally useless. I would love to be able to do a ponytail again. I only have the weekend off work will that be enough?

I had the MUA along with arthroscopic surgery.  I had it on a Tuesday - went back to work the next Monday in an office.  I would say total recovery is almost three months.  I still do not have full range of motion, but I do not have any pain anymore.  It was awful the first few weeks but it got better.  I couldnt sleep in my bed for about four weeks.  Now I can even lay on the side I had the surgery on, but sometiimes it will hurt a little if I lay on it too long.  But I do not have the pain like I had before the surgery.  Just be patient with the recovery.  I broke down a few times because of the pain but its worth it in the end.  Good luck.

thank you Bobby. I expect it will be painful but its painful now with no end in site of it budging.  I think I should try the MUA, really nothing to lose. I haven't been able to lay on that side since my rotator cuff surgery in November and that was always my sleeping side.  I've been breaking down these last few weeks, so thats why my surgeon has recommended this procedure. But I feel I don't have a choice if I want my arm back. Thank you
