Recovery Tips for Grade 2-3 Ankle Sprain

I would appreciate any recovery tips for a grade 2/3 ankle sprain.

I just want to make sure I am doing as much as I can to ensure the best recovery. I injured my ankle 3 weeks ago.

So far I am doing the following:

  • Wearing an air cast boot when weight bearing, some times using a crutch as well
  • Non-weight bearing exercises to get some range of motion back
  • Hot water immersion to reduce stiffness and ice water/ice pack to reduce inflammation
  • Ibuprofen and Paracetamol medication to relive pain at night

Also, I know you are not supposed to compress the ankle at night but I am wary that my foot moves around abit which isn't ideal.

Details of Injury & Diagnosis

I went over on my ankle playing soccer just over 3 weeks ago.

Based on the x-ray the doctor says I have an ankle avulsion sprain.

The physiotherapist reckons it is a grade 2-3 ankle sprain and has estimated a full recovery of 10-12 weeks.

I'm 13 months out from trimalleolar fracture. Plate and screws. Just had metal removed and back in cast. You are doing everything right. I found icing and elevating foot very helpful. Pt is a must. You'll be fine. I broke my foot 8 years ago in 2 places and was back to normal in 3 months. Good Luck!
