Rectal Bleeding

Hi,

Apologies for double posting this as didn't realise there was this dedicated group for haemorrhoids.

I've been suffering with intermittent rectal bleeding for almost a year now and wanted to ask my fellow sufferers what constitutes a "normal" amount of blood.

I was referred by my GP last June for an urgent 2 week colonoscopy but actually ended up having a flexible sigmoidoscopy. All was clear (phew) and they banded 2 haemorrhoids (stage 2) which they attributed the bleeding to.

The bleeding continued and i had another couple banded in January just gone.

Long story short, I'm still suffering from what i consider heavy bleeding with clots. It happens consistently for 4 to 5 days then stops for a week or two.

All this time I've had a dull pulling pain in my lower right abdomen which the consultant dismisses. This pain worsens right before i start bleeding again.

I could attach pics but wouldn't want to gross everyone out, but essentially the toilet looks like a blood bath and blood sprays into the toilet followed by fast dripping. When i wipe there are always clots. After flushing there are usually clots still in the bottom of the toilet. During the 4-5 days this can happen 3-4 times per day.

I'm just after some reassurance that others with haemorrhoids have similar experiences as i can't help worrying that something more sinister is going on.

    hello,

nobody can tell you its normal because to bleed from that area is never normal, however i can tell you that you are not alone. this happens to me 6-7 times a month. doctors are pretty rubbish about this kind of thing, i would however reccomend that you keep an eye on your iron levels. make sure you have regular blood tests at the gp to keep an eye on this and have a good iron intake daily. also lots of water especially coco nut water to help replace the blood youve lost. its scary as hell and has made me head straight to hospital multiple times, however rest assured you are not alone.

    Hi Toddy,

This was similar to what i used to experience before i took the bold step to undergo hemorrhoidectomy.

Here is a few things that i think is happening :When you make bowel movement ,your internal hemorrhoids gets a tear maybe from a hard stool and keeps bleeding as you know veins are interconnect down there hence reason for that fresh blood .once the hemorrhoid retracts ,d bleeding still doesnt stop reason why you may be having those clotted blood.

My recommendation will be to consider hemorrhoidectomy (though very pain and long recovery) but you will live a normal life again.

Set up an appointment with a colorectal surgeon and get it done .

Also ensure you are staying hydrated as much as possible to make your stool soft. This will help eliminate straining and potential tear when stool is coming down.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the replies.

My consultant had said that he'll give banding three goes before a haemorrhoidectomy so one more try to go, but I'm not hopeful.

Do other people get clots as well then as don't see other people mentioning them?

I am so sorry you are going through this. I dont have much advice to offer but my support and sympathy. I have hemorrhoids that slip out when I stand and also Pelvic Floor Issues. I am hoping to get mine done this summer. I went today and had a lot of mucus with some bleed in it. Having blood come out where it is not supposed to be freaks any of us out !

I hope you get some answers!

    Good Luck!

Ive suffer from hemorrhoids since i have my 15-years old girl. i had a 3rd degree tear when i gave natural birth in emergency room. internal and external hemorrhoids and got extremely worse. bleeding, swellowing like half hand fist size. Try all meds and doc wants surgery. i never do. Heard too many terrible story and won't go with surgery. Absolutely don't want to introduce other problems when trying to fix one.

last year, we moved and we also change our eating habbit. wanting more healthy. reduce meat, reduce fast food, juice more, water more. Ever since March last year, never problem from it. It swell couple times but no pain no blood. Nothing really irritates me at all. Most of time, its like a dead skin hanging in the area.

So my 2cents, i would focus on your food intake and habbit before considering and medical procedures.

    Best of luck,

    Jackie

good information, i too have internal hemroid, i do not want surgery either. The past year it comes and goes, bleeds with bowel movements on occassion. I had gallbladder surgery in JULY and I thought that all the diarrhea i was having post and pre op aggravated it to this point. I too have changed diet, drink lots of water. How long did it take you to get it to stop? I have anxiety everytime it happens although I know it is an internal hemroid that prolapses when aggravated. I have increased fiber intake and take a fiber supplement. ANY Insight is appreciated.

if only add fiber, tried for so many years.. eat more veg...drink that orange fiber stuff...never work. My guess is not eating enough. Even a bowl of salad, that still not enough for me to flip the situation.

However, things change around pretty quickly once i start to juice. It was like next day. it's amazing. right now, if my hemorriod return, i know what i did wrong. Btw, the juice i do was not even anything special. carrot juice, cucumber juice, celery... but i feel i should give celery juice a big thumb up. can't explain but just feel it works the best. i usually add it with cantalope and it's yummy.

the big NO came from fast food, especially anything deep fried and any meat like hamburger and pizza. i also stay away from spicy foods. somehow that irritates more.

i change all the soda drink to green tea. i mean tea bag in hot water. not the sweetened green tea in can.

i took 2 tbl ACV in the morning empty stomach with lots of.

when im hungry, i eat unsalted nuts. ie almond, cashew... i always carry a bag of nuts just in case.

      so, basically eat healthy.

btw, now i only juice on the weekend and the supply only last for half week. i have no problem with hemorrhoid. it is so small (compare to before), it really not bother me. no pain, no blood, not swelling big. im good.

      good luck all...

Hi, although it's embarrassing I'm going to start a new discussion with a pic (so i can warn people in the title). As is like to know if the aftermath is similar to other people as this will probably allay my anxiety over the situation.
