Rectal bleeding increasing, need advice.

Diagnosed fall 2016. Only symptom rectal bleeding, no pain etc. Prednisone had ended flares until 02/2018, but no longer works. Increased maintenance dose of Mesalamine to 4g/day for 3 weeks. Bleeding down to a trace. Back to maintenance dose and bleeding more than before. Lack of pain makes it hard for me to take this seriously (perhaps not seriously enough), but inconvenience got my attention--passing wind or a strong cough may suddenly eject smelly mucous and blood/clots. Earliest appointment I could get with my gastro-enterologist is July 12 (he's out of the country). Want advice on whether this is serious enough to immediately find another gastro doctor or whether it is safe to wait until 7/12. I like the guy I have. Thanks!

Increased bleeding is not a good sign... I don't think you should wait till July 12th. May be he has someone covering for him . My advice is .. go see a GI immediately ..pls do not wait.

Hi Caroline 77480 - I had UC which increased in severity for 5 years. I had no real pain but lots of bleeding and felt dreadful from the side effects of the drugs. You need a flexi sig (camera) investigation to see more clearly what is going on if you’ve not already had one. Normally if you already in the system you’ll have support from the Inflamatory Bowel Disease set up at your local hospital and can contact an IBD Nurse. Put pressure on, see someone as soon as you can. The IBD Nurse could get me an emergency appointment if required. Fingers crossed, good luck, take care.

    Hello Caroline ,

i was in your situation not so long back, no pains but still bleeding.

i can give you what helped me and put me in remission, but can you please speak to your doctor about what I been given. smile

first of all all I was on 1g 4x day for months, it wasn’t helping neither was steroids.

so I decided to do some research, I spoke to the doctor about possibly testing out suppositories.

Maybe my rectal and lower colon area was not getting touched by oral medication.

so first week on 1G  of pentasa Suppositories, I Noticed no blood, I was able to pass wind in public without risk. Maybe it was reaching my lower colon faster. You must realise oral meds must pass through throat , stomach, and 20ft of colon. So that’s something to think about.

second : I been taking antihistamine for my hayfever from day1 I felt something I never expected, solid hard stools, 0 trace of blood. Now it’s 10 days in, I’m eating what I want, having solid stools. I’m living like normal.

Do some research on antihistamines , and chat to the doctor.

Hope this helps in any way shape or form. Please keep me updated.
