Rectocele & cystocele repair post-op lump?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi ladies! I had a cystocele and rectocele repair on the 21st (so 4 days ago). The doctor used a tape sling for the cystocele and stitching for the rectocele. I honestly had no idea what to expect and didn't even know that he would be cutting2 slits on my outer labia. What's actually hurting me now are the interior stitches which I assume are from the rectocele repair. I wanted to check out what was going on down there and there is a lump, almost like 1/2 of a finder, bulging out of my vaginal canal. Is this normal? Am I just swollen? I'm freaking out over here!

The lump is perfectly normal so please don't worry. It will be there for quite a few weeks yet so complete rest for the next 2 weeks and allow yourself to heal x

Thank you Matron! I'm 36 with 4 sons ages 2, 3, 9, and 12. I'm trying my hardest to rest and recoup, but it seems impossible. Today I had no help with my little ones and I've already had to chase them up the stairs 3 times... And then I'm back to work the day after tomorrow... Thankfully I'm a teacher and can sit and stand as needed. I honestly didn't expect it to be this rough!

Gillian, the kids (all 4 ages 2-12) were able to go to my mother's on Friday. Then my husband was home during the weekend. Today I'm alone with my 2 little ones and they're not letting me sit still... I want to just lay down and rest, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.

Lunabella you're going back to work very early in fact far too early. Are you sure you are well enough? Sorry but I'm shocked and can't imagine any doctor saying it's ok. Please please be careful because rectocele repair takes a long time to heal and at the moment you shouldn't even lift anything heavier than a kettle with a mug full of water. For the first 2 weeks you are supposed to rest and nothing else.

My doctor didn't want me to go back so early, but I don't have a choice. I do not have enough sick days from work so if I stay home I don't get paid and I have to pay my portion of  the insurance (I'm in the US). Basically that means it will cost me $1250 per week to stay home. On top of that I won't be able to send the kids to daycare so I will still have to chase after them (which is much more difficult than my actual job!

Matron I have a real asking under my right hip what do you think it can be?
    • Posted

Gillian it's probably due to the position you were put in for your operation. It often causes hip, leg and back pain. Your legs are put in lithotomy poles so there will have been some stretching of the muscles and tendons. On top of that the operating table is hard. As if we didn't have enough to contend with!

Matron or anyone else, I have another question. I noticed today that on my labia where they made an incision there is hard round lump, the size of your thumb nail. It t's where the stitches were and it hurts (more today than the other days) and is swollen. Could this be an infection from the stitches?

It's always possible it could be an infection. Do you have any other symptoms such as feeling generally unwell or flu like symptoms? If not the chances are it will settle and it's just normal swelling from the operation however if you're worried you must see your doctor.

My question is why would they cut the labia matron??

      Hi Welsh,

I had a Cystocele repair where they placed a tape/sling to lift and but the urethra in place. They cut through the labia for that (I had no idea).

      Thank you Matron,

I put in a call to the surgeon's office. It feels like an abscess, I just want to make sure it's ok and if not get some antibiotics.
