Recurrent flareups. Should I ask to be referred back to the dermatologist?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I was finally diagnosed with vulval LP in 2017, but had suffered from it for two years before that. I was discharged from the dermatologist's care in 2018 but, since then, have had three flareups, one of which lasted a few months. I've just seen this morning that I've got another one - itchy, raised, red lesions. So, I'm back to using the Dermovate.

As these flareups keep happening, do you think it's worth asking to see the dermatologist again? Or shall I just plod on? Things clear up, then I'm back to square one again! She said that she would be happy to see me again if necessary.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have Oral Lichen Planus and Bullous Lichen Planus. So far i have escaped your issue, but i would definitely go back to derm. no need to suffer unneccesarily, if you can afford. my oral kind can turn into cancer if not treated. i don't know if your kind can or not. have you asked that question?

Thanks for your reply, Gail. So sorry to hear that you have both oral lichen planus and bullous lichen planus. Yes, I've been told to keep regularly checking the area in case it does develop into cancer - quite worrying. I think I'm definitely going to ask to be re-referred back to my dermatologist and get her advice. She is very good and, thankfully, no cost to me to see her as I live in the UK and covered by the National Health Service. Take care.

You poor baby! Unfortunately, LP is one of the "forgotten" diseases, as far as doctors are concerned. They have no treatments or cures that are effective, so you basically just plod on.

I don't think you'll get any different treatment as what you're using seems to be the only treatment. I have vulval lichen planus also, since 2016. I have just been discharged because they said at the moment my LP us well controlled. But it's good to get reassurance from a professional sometimes. Hope your flair up is short lived.
