Recurrent pneumonia in 11 month old

My little one has been diagnosed with pneumonia 3 times in the past month.   She is not coughing, no wheezing, and only shows mild head congestion, high fevers (104/105) and rapid breathing.  Her oxygen levels have been great and everytime the doctors listen they say, "she sounds clear".  Then, they do a chest xray and find pneumonia.     She has had 2 xrays that have confirmed the pneumonia but each time in a different spot.  (1/18 and 1/23 xrays done).  1/18 in right lower lobe and 1/23 in left lower lobe.

Over the course of the past month, starting 12/21/15 she has had amoxicilin, augmentin, omicef, rocefin shots, and now zithomycin to clear up the pneumnoia.

We go back to the doctor tomorrow after being released from the hospital this weekend.  Should I push to see a pulmonologist?    Each "treatment' she seems to get better but in only lasts about 3-5 days and then we are right back to where we started.  Anyone else had this experience?

Hi Lesslie99286: You should absolutely see a very good pulmonolgist and an infectious disease Dr. Your Daughter needs to have a CT scan done of her lungs. A regular chest x-ray will not show what's really going on. It could be Bronchiectasis or cystic Fibrosis or Mac lung disease. I have Bronchiectasis and have had NTM or Mac lung disease. If I can ask what part of the Country do you live in? Please let me know and make sure you get to a Dr. That deals with different types of lung disease. I've been a patient advocate for years. If you would like to talk more I would be happy to talk with you. Good luck to you and your family. Elizabeth Gates

Lesslie I am definitely not an expert, but catching pneumonia made me do a lot of research. It possible that your little one's pneumonia is viral in origin. The virus could be stubborn and hanging around, maybe still in her lungs. Viruses can damage tissue making them susceptible to bacterial infection. The symptoms seem to subside then the symptoms reappear because the virus is still around. Just a theory. Is anyone else in the household ill?

My wife and daughter were sick as long as I was and were the first to get sick, but I was the only one who got pneumonia, at least symptomatically.

Feel for you and your family. Having a sick child is one of the most disturbing events in life.

I am so sorry to hear you little one and you have been struggling.

Absoltely, definitely, withou doubt you should see a pulmonologist.  Your little one will then have thorough tests from a specialist.  Hopefully things will be well but at least little one will have a baseline assessment and you will know where you stand and will get the correct treatment leading to a much brighter future.

Be proactive sweetheart and don't take no for an answer.  I know you will.

    Good luck to you both.

    With love
