Recurrent throat ulcers/sore throat

Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me with a problem I have had for a few years. Back in Januray 2012 I contracted Glandular Fever and was sick for a couple of weeks. Ever since then I have had a sore throat on and off and nothing it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I get frequent mouth ulcers, the back off my throat is almost always red and patchy with ulcers and sometimes I even get the on my uvula.

I have seen my GP about this a year or so ago and was referred to a throat specialist who pretty much told me to wait it out, but it is very frustrating considering it's been over three years. I have also noticed that alcohol seems to make the problem worse, but being at uni I didn't have much chance to avoid it. My general health is relatively good, if I pick up an infection intend to fight it off quickly and don't get that sick. It's just this which is more frustrating than anything. The only other thing I would say is that I do have mild hayfever and always seem to wake up with phlegm in my throat so I'm not sure if this attributes to it.

What else can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi,  sorry to hear that you are sick.  I have a lot of experience in what you are going threw.

When you went to the specialist did they scope your throat?  Do you suffer from acid reflex?

Thanks for the reply. No he just looked in my throat and told me to wait, and then gave me some antivirals in case I ever felt really sick. I do often have a nasty taste in my mouth especially first thing in the morning. I believe some of the irritation must be related to the allergies I get

      Hi

I really hope that you read this and you are  now better . My daughter is suffering with exactly what you describe.

She got glandular fever 6 months ago and is now first year at uni-almost constant ulcers in throat.

If you did find a miracle cure I would b so grateful for your reply.

      Thanks

I was going to a Pulmonary Specialist my 2nd complaint was my throat,  hoarseness, and pain in my ears.  For 9 months I was told it will go away.  Finally when I had no voice left I demanded to see a ENT Specialist.  I was scoped and they found 2 large ulcers on my vocal cords.  It came from a bacteria and a fungus infection.  (long use of medications)  Also I was given meds for acid reflex and GERD  even though I never had heart burn.  Here when you sleep you could have acid coming up and not even know it.   It could explain why you have a nasty taste in your mouth.  You should have all the test done related to your throat.
