recurring cystitis and hospital appointments

I'm eighteen and have suffered from cystitis since my first sexual partner 3 years ago. it came on recurringly after sex. after we broke up i had no sex and no problems for 2 years, thank god. Met my new boyfriend last september, and for a while no problems with sex, no cystitis. however, it all started to occur 2 months in and ever since then im getting cystitis nearly every 2 weeks, coming on randomly, with it lasting about as long. i went to the doctor in february, who did a urinary test, swab test and with inconclusive results.

The next time i got it, i went back in and they prescribed me some antibiotics, which made no difference after a week, so they put me on more. They had to up the dosage twice because nothing worked. eventually the highest one did nothing and ive been referred to the hospital for a kidney scan and examination (which is next week). Only bad thing is, my cystitis has come on again and im about to do my final A levels tomorrow, and the last time i had cystitis i got a D in my exam!!

I always drink loads of water which the doctor said (most patronisingly i must add!) and cranberry juice, and i even buy the cymalon packets to put in my drinks which used to work. He also said to empty my bladder after sex, all the usual, which does seem to work. But usually it comes on randomly, with or witout sex.

I'm currently suffering it, which is why im posting. I'm worried that a) my exams will be messed up - no university for me

b) that the kidney scan and examination will find nothing, and i'll be stuck like this forever with no treatments that can really help.

My boyfriend is realy supportive of me and is helping me as much as possible but its annoying when we try and be intimate and i end up worrying i'll get ill so refuse sex, or sometimes have sex and then get cystits. With this bout of cystitis we've agreed we wont have sex until it goes and my exams are over. But i feel like i shouldnt have to compromise my life because of the unbearable pain that cystitis brings!!

I just hope i can treat it somehow because i dont think i can live my life having this forever!

Anyone who wishes to reply is more than welcome, maybe leave some additional advice if you can!

I completely sympathise with anyone who suffers with this, its awful and interupts your life. My advice is if you're getting it often, push to be referred to the hospital for examinations and tests, because I don't feel the Doctors took me seriously, and just fobbed me off with 'drinks lots of water and cranberry'. NOT USEFUL MUCH

Dear VIX, I am a grandma now but during my younger maried years i to sufered terrible painful recurring cystitis with similar doctors reactions until one elderly GP gave me this advice. Do not overwash or use toiletries on genitals. wear coton underwear and no tight trousers or knickers. At the first sign of it get a jug of warm, not hot water and dissolve a teaspoon or two of bicarbonate of soda, then pour it betwen your legs after you pee. It kills the alkaline that burns and is an antseptic too. Sometimes, in desperation, I have made a loose paste of it and pushed it inside, but take care as this sometimes burns a little. He also advised half a teaspoon in a large glass of water, several times a day.

He did suggest I douched myself with a solution of the soda water just one time only, but douching is not considered safe these days and he insisted it was ONE TIME ONLY not one time each time. I had C so bad I would bleed and have never had it so bad sincem (40 yr ago) Tho I get it now and then. Dont go too long without a pee and pee after intercourse & wipe yourself with a clean wet flannel. Good luck. Paddy

Hi, I'm 23 and have suffered from cystitis since I was 18. It started to get worse when I was having regular sex with my boyf. I too have been for a kidney scan..and nothing showed up.. that was about 3 years ago now.. As I write this now I am on a weeks course of anti-biotics for an infection I've had for 3 weeks.. My doctor's are useless and always fob me of with drink plenty of water and so on...I drink that much water I go to the toilet every hour, it doesn't make a difference anyway.. I have read in a health magazine last week that cystitis is linked with diabeties and advise my doctor this.. he is now testing my blood sugar level to see if this is a factor.. my advice would be to try cut out all sugar from your diet to see if this makes a difference.. sugar feeds the infection.. I have found after I've had a chocolate binge (I'm a choco-holic since alcohol triggers my cystitis) I get symptons the next day.. Also I'm booked in for an allergy test to see if I'm intolerant to any foods as I also read this can trigger the infection. Hope this is some help for you, I sympathise with you as it also ruined my driving test (although it's not as important as A levels). Good luck x

Hi I have just came across this. Was just wanting to ask if you have had any treatment for this since this post? I suffer quite badly from this and the only thing my consultant at the hospital has suggested is botox injections in my bladder but I am not entirely sure I should go ahead with it...

I know how you feel about the patronising doctors telling you to drink lots of water. I don't think someone who has never experienced this kind of pain has the right to just send you up the road with antibiotics and gallons of water! Something needs to get done about this as we are far too young to be sufferring from this! I definitely do not think it is as common as the doctors make it out to be as none of my friends/family have ever suffered from this.

    Good luck!
