recurring sleep difficulties

I have never found falling to sleep easy. On a normal day, I go to bed at 11pm and it takes me approximately 1.5 hours.

December 2013, this duration increased to 3 hours for a couple of weeks and I tried natural sleeping tablets that you can get over the counter, they worked well at first but within days it was back to 2 hours.

March 2014, it became 4+ hours, including a couple of nights in which I got up at 4:30 am without having slept at all. I was prescribed zopiclone (not sure of the spelling), the first night I fell asleep within 30 minutes (a unique occurence) but by the end of the two weeks it was taking at least an hour.

December 2014 it returned, this time 3 hours but I also found it more difficult to wake up in the morning. I was prescribed antihistamines, which had no effect. The one thing that seemed to have any effect was skipping a night of sleep. This appeared to reset my sleep pattern, I fell asleep within 2 hours and woke up on time.

However, this has kept returning since December, with varying intervals (sometimes a couple of weeks, sometimes a couple of days) and over the last 2 weeks I have been waking up close to midday and falling asleep at around 2am (give or take an hour). I have missed numerous lectures and finding it difficult to keep up with the workload due to a lack of focus.

I am trying to get another medical appointment, but I am not hopeful that it will be very helpful. Just some tips or information rather than a prescription would be appreciated

    Hi Mythos,

Dont worry, your not on your own with this as im sure your aware. Finding a perfect sleep pattern for your self is sometimes something that takes more than a few weeks.

Often enough with medications, the body becomes slightly immune meaning that those initial tablets that you took, may never work aswell as the first night you took them. I find it beneficial to work the way you do and look to resetting your sleeping pattern by staying up untill the next bedtime.

Have you tried setting the scene together with some meditation. Do you feel you have a lot of worries or stress somewhere in your life - Maby you could do some brain storming with a sleep diary to see is you can find any phycological connections to why your having trouble.

Do you sleep well when your asleep ( without aid )

It goes without saying that there are alot of surrounding factors related to sleeping problems and its all to easy to use tablets but like i said, they will become ineffective overtime as the body becomes more and more immmune to them.

Try winding down a bit earlier, hot baths ect.

A prescriptions an easy fix for a while, but i think you want more of a natural long term solution.

I dont stress much at all, not even before an exam. I dont have any issues after falling to sleep, in fact I am a very deep sleeper.I find that every time I manage to achieve a regular sleep pattern, within a couple of weeks it starts to become later, even If I keep going to bed  and try to wake at the same time each day. Thanks for the reply

Yes that's also the same for me. I will sometimes manage to sleep a bit better then it goes back to my old pattern. I used to drink a lot to try and sleep I was wondering if that disturbed my sleep pattern irreparably.

I'm the same, I find it really hard to get to sleep and the only thing that makes me fall asleep quickly is missing a night or two of sleep.

I'm always in bed by around midnight or sometimes 11/11:30, but often I can't sleep till 3, 4, 5 in the morning. I feel so groggy and then my day is ruined.

No sleep for me also sets other stuff off as I have hallucinations and I find they get worse when I haven't slept. It also makes me more depressed, it's an absolute nightmare. I don't know what to do I feel like I'm on the edge of a breakdown.
