So, before assuming the worst i have this somewhat rash going on downstairs on my scrotum. The texture of the skin is smooth and leathery and has a slight itch. Attached is an image as you can see the skin is also dry cause there is scaling taking place. Any ideas on what to do Id appreciate it.image

    Dear ryan,

This looks like a patch of lichenified skin on the scrotum- your description of it being slightly itchy, leathery and smooth fits the bill. It's also less hairy than the surrounding skin.

Lots of causes for this, including eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, fungal infection etc. Lichen simplex is not a primary process. Rather, the underlying cause/s makes the person sense the need to scratch in a specific area of skin and causes mechanical trauma to the point of lichenification. So have you been been repeatedly scratching this particular area?

The best way of managing it is to find the underlying cause or trigger and then to treat that. This will stop you from scratching the area and the skin will then return to normal. If you can't readily identify the cause, I suggest you see a dermatologist.

    Rgds,

    Adhari

Thank you for the information and the directions to take. I do itch the area often and dont really have an idea as to what it may be but will certainly look into it. Thank you.
