Red penis glan, red/purple penis head rim, bumpy corona

Hey all, I have noticed this red spot on my penis glan that is surrounded by a white/light color. Additionally, I have noticed that on occasion, the edges of my penis head have these purple/flesh tone bumps that protrude a little bit, typically after sex/masturbation. They do not blister and carry fluid. Any thoughts?

I am regularly tested each year for STD's and have been negative however, I was unaware I do not get tested for HSV until I learned via this platform. I am scheduling an appointment next week to fully test. Photos included..

Thank you.

    Does this look like HSV2?

In terms of the white / light colour: pigmentation variation is very common across the human body, and particularly on the genitals. It is unlikely that you have a health issue that is causing this.

In terms of what you have on the corona / rim / head edge - this also is very common - it is possible the very sensitive skin that makes up the glans / head of the penis is reacting to what it is in contact with on a regular basis.

This can quite literally be anything from the types of body wash you use - such as soaps and shower gels, or if you always use something as a for of lube for sex or masturbation it could be this it is reacting to.

However, during sex and masturbation this places a great deal of friction on the skin on the upper-part of the penis, and in effect what is causing the irritation is more likely to be a combination of everything, or at least a number of things the skin on the head of the penis is in contact with - this impact is then multiplied by the demands made of the skin during masturbation and sex.

In terms of general penile skin health the thing to try to work towards for healthiest skin is water only for cleaning and washing, and, exclude everything else

Thank you for this detailed response, very much appreciated.

The corona bumps have since gone down and returned to a much more neutral skin tone color after having taken a week away from sexual activities. The center glans spot is still visible so I scheduled an appointment with my GP just to double check.

So, in simple terms, every week that you have no sexual activities - with the proviso that there is no contact with harmful items placed on the skin as I have previously explained - the healthier your skin will become.

Depends on how long you would want to abstain - but you could limit activities to once, or potentially twice a week as long as you have no return to, or worsening of symptoms.

Update your Forum Post here once you have seen the GP on what their recommendations are .......

Update: Used Anti-fungal, no real improvement. Scheduling a visit with GP next week.

    • these photos are after use, I have tried a few weeks without sexual activity and it appears no progress has been made. the corona of glans still has redness and non-sensitive little bumps that blend in after a while without use then come back worse with an erection. Mainly on the right side of the corona, this area clears up a bit more than the left side, which has redness still.

    thoughts?!

have you tried a topical antibiotic (mupirocin) mixed with aquaphor. use it twice daily for 2 weeks.

I have not but can ask my Doctor about the combination. Are you suggesting this to be a bacteria infection of the sort?

    • Posted

yep, if it not responded to anti fungal treatment it could be some bacterias. nothing to worry about, just an overgrowth of typical skin bacterias.

I have something that looks very similar. Not been able to shift as yet. Specialist ensures its contact dermatitis so currently on steroid cream. Good luck

Are you experiencing issues on the glans or the corona area? Any improvement whatsoever with the steroid cream? Thanks and you too.

Yes, similar. Dark purple area on the rim. Area under foreskin looks 'cracked' and irritated. Steroid has sorted the pain which im happy about but not sorted the underlying issue as yet

any bumps or raised areas around the corona? some of them even look like veins..most noticeable after sexual activity.

and for an update, this has been going on for about a month now, maybe a bit longer..

Welcome to the forum. I've seen many conditions like yours now and no one has been able to figure out what it is. Some men here have even consulted with the top penile skin doctors in the world without any possible cures. Probably a combination of things resulting in an autoimmune dermatological reaction on the glans skins.

Thank you for your insight. Yeah, I spent a great deal of time on this forum and found many similar situations. My first instinct was if hpv or hsv were somehow causing this but it has been going on for quite some time now. My GP advised to use a anti-fungal cream for two weeks, as did many others in this scenario. I don't have a ton of faith there but will report back.

After three weeks with anti-fungal, no progress. Awaiting GP reply for next steps.
