Hello John, hopefully I can give you some information that will be of help to you. Conditions like this are most often caused by what the skin is exposed to. So this can be an accumulative effect of being exposed to years of things like soap, shower gel and other body cleansers. Lots of men have regularly used skin creams and baby oil and suchlike for masturbation and for sex - in simple terms we can term this as constant exposure to chemicals that are unhelpful to the skin of the head of the penis.

Then for men who are sexually active one of the regular things they are exposed to are yeast and other bacterial infections - and this can be the tipping-point in skin that may not have looked problematical, but was considerably irritated from the years of exposure to a variety of chemicals.

The term Balanitis is not very helpful as most often it is simply referring to the presence of irritated skin of the head (and / or foreskin) of the penis.

What you need to think about therefore is have you recently had unprotected sex and may have picked up a yeast (unprotected vaginal) infection, or other bacterial infection (unprotected vaginal or anal)?

Many men self-treat with over the counter products such as Canesten that contain Clotrimazole when they suspect they have, or recognise that they have a fungal, yeast or bacterial infection.

What you need to think about is what has your penis, and in particular the head area been exposed to both recently, and also, on a long-term basis?

The 'cure' is easy to say, and can be difficult to achieve - but simply, you need to return the head and surrounding area of your penis to its natural state - and this means removing exposure to anything and everything that can be a further, or continued irritant to an already quite irritated skin.

If you want professional help with this the best Specialist would be a Dermatologist, or better still, a Dermatologist who specialises in Genital Skin Disorders .......

I was told it was a yeast infection, i had sex december 20 something and got those red dots a day later. ill be honest she was on her period and i did not shower right after. i went to the doctor and he prescribed clotrimazole, the spots come and go time to time. i havent had sex since december and for them to be coming back still worries me. i do masturbate daily and dont clean as good as i should and i do work construction in south texas so the heat is pretty bad here. is there a good soap or antifungal soap i could use? or just warm water? i use dove extra clean to wash my area.

keep it as natural as possible, water only exclude everything else - you do really need 'squeaky clean' hygiene practices, or simply, this is not going to go away.

After masturbation the worst possible thing you can do is to leave ant traces of semen or pre-ejaculate on or around the head area of the penis. If any remains in place all night for example, when you fall-asleep, irritated skin like yours simply cannot cope with it. So you need to wash straight after you have ejaculated - then for the next half-hour or so, keep checking to see if any further semen residue has appeared and remove it with a clean tissue.

I actually keep a clean toweling face cloth for this purpose only - a pack of 5 or so costs next to nothing. What would also be helpful for you is to get some liquid soap flakes to at least wash your underwear, face cloths if you get some, and potentially all the towels that you use as well ........

How long did you use the clotrimazole for? If the spots keep coming back it would suggest that you did not fully get rid of the infection, or potentially, they are caused by something else - if you have not had sex since then, there should be no chance of re-infection going on .......
