Reducing Pred - Blood Glucose Levels

Posted , 10 users are following.

There must be something on this in the forum - but I can't find any ATM.

As the Pred dosage is reduced would one expect Blood Glucos leels to do so also or does this vary? We've no idea what hubby's levels wee prior to diagnosis as it was about 30 or more years since he'd seen a GP previously.

Given that HbA1c cover 3 months would he be adised to monitor at home also?

Finding ANYTHING on this forum is next to impossible! It works best via google!

Yes, theoretically as the pred dose falls, the BS levels should fall too. And I suppose that yes, home monitoring is required just to be able to say what particular things make his BS shoot up - it varies a lot from person to person. OTOH, since pred makes the liver release random spikes of glucose you would have to be careful in interpeting the one-off readings and it would make insulin calculations a bit dodgy.  If he is just on metformin or the like it is merely useful and informative as to what to avoid.

Really he should be under the care of a diabetes specialist - it is a complex situation.

Pred does affect blood glucose levels, in fact if you look how they've recently divided diabetes into 5 categories, steroid induced diabetes is one of the five. I have recently lost over two stone but my HbA1c only lowered by 3 degrees. My gp says it should go down as I lower the steroids, so am hoping.....

Jones, I am a long time type 2 Diabetic, my normal A1C were low 6s high 5s, but when on 10+ levels of Pred, I was up in the mid 8s and that was with additional meds. Now on 7 mg tapering to 6.5, last week my A1C was 6.1. Hopefully I will be able to drop some of the Diabetes meds soon.

I hope that helps you understand. I wish your husband good luck on his PMR journey. Tell to stay positive and try to smile. ☺️

Thanks people for the helpful replies.

Surgery will have had the HbA1c results as there was a phonecall for him to see one of the nurses re "Diabetes Check" next week - he can ask for a monitoring kit then.

GP had said they no longer do random test at the health centre, just the HbA1c but but they could supply a monitoring kit if he wanted.

Jones, I check myself several times daily. When trying to find out how the diet is working; I test 7 times a day. You can estimate what the day contributing to the the A1C. So I believe testing several times a day, will be a great help. Good luck on your journey, stay active, positive and try to smile.☺️
