I hve been able to schedule an appointment with a surgeon that was recommended to me.  He operates privately and also NHS.  I am NHS.  Appointment is not until mid January, and I am wondering, given that NHS is not adhering to the 18 week schedule, how long I am likely to wait for surgery.  I live in Wiltshire, but the surgery will be in Somerset.

I live alone and have no family, other than a daughter living in Somerset who does ot drive, so is unable to get out to here to me.  Usually I pick her up at the rail station, but will not be able to do that post op.  Other than that, I have absolutely no outside support.

Does my situation carry any weight at all with the NHS, or am I expected to manage on my own, both pre op and post op, and in growing pain pre op?

Susie I have both hips done now in spire hospital which is the new name for bupa, done on nhs, I agree with you that you would not be allowed home unless there was someone to help you especially in the first 10 days, I would definitely contact your surgeons Secretary she should be able to do something

Agreed - it is something they checked before I left. I am hoping they do it with all patients in all hospitals?

      Hi Marilynn:

I do not remember saying that the hospital would not release me unless I had someone at home to help me.  I live alone, and am totally self reiant.  My GP has stated that anything that is needed, will be set up for me prior to release.

I shall speak with the consultant's secretary at the approporiate time.

      Kind regards,

      Susie

      Hi Rose:

If the hospitals are not prepared to release a  patient unless there is someoe else at home, the hospitals would be clogged, and it would also discriminate against patients who live alone, have always been self reliant, divorced, widowed, or not.  What woud the NHS propose to do with all of those people?

Well as I'm now on day 6 following a thr and still in hospital (mine was complex surgery and I am none weight bearing on the op leg, so have to hop with a frame or crutches depending on how strong I'm feeling) I also had a blood transfusion and low BP but am feeling much better now and just waiting for Physio to deem me safe for discharge. Their concern is that I will be alone for long periods and they just one to make sure I'm ready to cope. I have spoken to many ladies of varying ages and living arrangements and each one is individual. There are those that are up and about the next day and managing amazingly well and are discharged quickly, others take time to build confidence and need a little more help. I have had very good support and been given advice and information all along and have been given all the equipment I could possibly need to ensure I can be as independent as possible. I have a little trolley to push with a tray on for meals/drinks, a perching stool to use in any room required, aids for dressing etc... I feel confident in going home now and hopefully will be discharged tomorrow. There have been ups and downs but I'm feeling so positive now.

You sound like your a strong lady and will do just fine!
