Yes unfortunately you can still pass on the virus while taking valtrex even without having an outbreak. Valtrex doesn't do anything to control the virus all it does is help lower the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

Yes, if you have a breakthrough outbreak or shedding, but this should be greatly reduced if you are on the correct dosage. If my memory serves me correctly, the transmission risk is about 5% per year for a hetero man, or 2% per year for a hetero woman. Note that this is per year, not per sex act.

I'm taking 500 mg of valtrex, and only had my first initial outbreak. I really like this guy that I have been talking to and he actually asked if I was clean before we had sex. I'm just so embarressed to tell him because I'm afraid he will never want to talk to me. I need advice. I wish there was a way to get rid of it completely.

Do you have Type 1 or 2? Makes a huge difference. Also, how did you answer him? Curious! Yeah, I'm sure we all wish it would go away completely and forever. Sucks.

I'm not even sure my obgyn never told me, she just said the result came back positive. I just said "yeah" because I didn't want to tell him. He had been using condoms but it broke... and that's when he asked me. I heard if it is genital then it is hsv2. But idk I know u can get it if someone has a cold sore in there mouth it can transmitted to the genitals. Uhm I know exactly who I got it from and if I can remember I think he did show me a sore on the inside of his lip. And then told me it hurt. So I'm wondering if it from that since he performed oral....

Can you do an at home test that will tell you if it is hsv 1 or 2 or does it have to be sent to a lab?

Needs to be sent to a lab. It is worth calling your clinic to ask about the type. If they're any good, they would have used a type-specific test, so maybe they just didn't tell you. Sounds like you could well have genital Type 1, and yes you can get that down below, and no the location does not make it Type 2. Two related but separate viruses, the number being simply part of the name. Type 1 is much better and safer to have genitally, so it is worth confirming.

Thank you a lot for the information. I want to call and ask but I don't know how to word it because I don't want to sound stupid ...

Also how is type 1 safer to have genitally . Does it not transmit as much as type 2???

Just say that in [month, year] you were diagnosed with genital herpes by [swab?], but not told the HSV type. Since you have learnt that the type is quite useful and important to know, you would like to find out if the swab was type-specific, and if so, can they confirm whether you have genital HSV-1 or HSV-2.

Read the info I posted to this thread. Type 1 is less infectious than Type 2 when it is genital.

I also heard that if you were recently just diagnosed u are more contagious. And you have more of a chance of passing it. I got it in July of this year

      Infected ** not diagnosed

Oops, I meant read the info in my thread pinned to the top of the genital herpes forum.

Yes, new infections are more contagious, especially before full antibody production (3-4 months) and the first year generally. That is particularly true of gHSV-2.

Hey so I'm pretty sure it is HSV 1 because I got pink eye during my first break out in both of my eyes.
