Relapse after drinking?

Hello Everyone,

I initially fell ill around the end of January, did not find out until June that I had active EBV. My recovery has been slow, but encouraging. I still randomly get a little itchy rash or have an afternoon where I feel a little fatigued but overall much better than I felt earlier this year. I go to work everyday, run errands, socialize with friends on the weekends, etc.

That said I am not a big drinker and have not had anything to drink this year up until this past Saturday night. I was pretty hungover on Sunday and spent most of my day in bed convinced I was dying. However, since yesterday I feel like EBV is jumping back on me. Fatigue, some tingling in my fingers, burning mouth and pain under my rib cage on the right side. I really hope it doesn't come back in full force or that I have damaged my liver in any permanent way. Has anyone else had this experience with EBV and drinking, even after feeling mostly better?

    Hi Olivia,

It is good to see a message from you an sorry to hear you've had this set back the last few days, I really hope it is just a minor setback in the grand scheme and that you will get back on track soon as I know you've been through a tough time this year.

I'm not a drinker myself but at the time of having mono I remember just at the very beginning of mono many years ago I had just one or two and did feel extra rough the next day, even though I knew I hadn't drunk too much. I just want to reassure you Olivia that it is highly unlikely that one drinking evening like that after many months of not drinking will have caused any excess harm to your liver, it may well be just what happens with this virus sometimes, just a small trigger can make things feel intense again for a short time - I had a few mini episodes like this during recovery and it can be very frightening I know, but truly Olivia this virus can't harm you the way it did in the beginning and my experience of these kind of lapses was that they felt horrible at the time and all the symptoms come flooding back but that it settled down very quickly again and was just a minor blip along the road to longer term recovery.

Hoping you feel much better soon and of course always wise to see the doc if the pain in the ribcage continues, but remember too that pain there can be very common even during recovery from mono, so hoping very much that it is nothing to worry about and that you will be better more settled again soon. Thinking about you!
