Ok so my Dr switched My Cocodomol 30/500 to codeine phosphate 30mg 3 months ago. I first started taking Cocodomol in 2005. When he switched me to codeine phosphate 30mg I only took 2 tablets 4 times a day to control my back pain.

Recently my back pain got worse so I'm now taking two codeine phosphate 30mg and 3 nurofen plus 12.8mg 6 times a day. It's taken over my life again.

Any ideas on how to taper off the nurofen plus would be gratefully appreciated. So I'm taking in total 600mg codeine a day. Sometimes a little more.

Thanks

Latchy

I am a bit confused. 2 x 30g codeine tablets 6 times per day would make 360g per day not 600g. Still not good but not quite as bad. Does your doctor know you are taking this many tablets per day.it sounds to me as though you need to go back to your doctor and talk about different pain relief and taper off what you are taking.

Hi Gill. Sorry was up too early. I take two codeine which is 60mg plus 3 nurofen plus 12.8mg so that's 38.4mg so in total 98.4mg of codeine per dose six times a day so I rounded it off to a daily total of 600mg. I just want to taper off the nurofen plus. I have tramadol as well but can take or leave those, don't see why people become addicted to them.

Thanks Latchy.  Can I just ask, would you be better going on a different painkiller if these are only effective at such large doses. Does tramadol not work? I have found it is more effective for me when I have severe pain - I cannot take Nuroften plus because of gastro-oesaphageal reflux disease so I do not have that temptation.

Yes he offered me dihydrocodeine but was scared I'd go through terrible withdrawal so I said I'd stick at the codeine and tramadol. I have other health issues at the moment and am in pain. Maybe oramorph might be the best for my pain. I'll discuss it with him when I go on 23rd. I'm a little hesitant about it as a standard dose of oramorph that would work for a none addict yet wouldn't touch my pain as I can tolerate such high doses of opiates

Sorry to hear that you are in such a lot of pain. Have you considered getting a referral to a pain specialist. Just out of interest can you tell me the difference between codeine and dihydrocodeine?I too struggle with pain but fortunately it clearly is not as bad as yours as I can control it with cocodamol 30/500 2 x 4 times per day.

Hi Gill. My Dr told me that dihydrocodeine is more addictive than codeine but is stronger at lower doses. I really don't find that tramadol work for me. I'm going to ask to be re referred to the pain team

Thanks for explaining that. I am peased you are asking for a referral to the pain team. Let me know how you get on

Hi Gill. Today I've cut down by 12.8mg per dose of codeine. I've booked an appointment with my GP on 23rd Sept to review my pain medication. I'm thinking that all opioids are addictive though. Maybe oramorph is my option as I can't buy extra over the counter and is more affective at lower doses. I've been reading about dihydrocodeine and it seems many are addicted to that as much as codeine!
