Relentless hypnic jerks for a week

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am exhausted, every night when I am going to sleep I wake up again because my body (90% time the neck) will jerk slightly. This wakes me up again. This happens over and over and over again. It is driving me crazy and ruining my sleep. I have a history of anxiety but I am not on any medication at the moment. Has anyone experienced this and know how to overcome it? I googled it and it seems to be stress/anxiety related.

    hi Michael

I too suffer with hypnic jerks, Ive had them for years, it happens when I'm relaxing or just nodding off, it can be anywhere throughout my body, my legs shoulder or my whole body just jumps awake. it doesnt happen every night but when it does it really effects my quality of sleep, then I end up getting really anxious about it and it makes it worse. I also suffer with twitching throughout my body again I've had it for years and it gets worse with anxiety

cant really give you any advice apart from the more you worry or stress about it, the worse it will get. I know it's easier said than done but you need to try and relax and not focus on it too much. occupy your mind with reading, or listening to some relaxing music x

Thanks for the kind words. Yes I'm pretty sure it's anxiety related, because I only started noticing them after I had a big full body one last week. It's just trying to train myself to not freak out going to sleep. I'm probably causing them myself, which is ironic.

I went through a period of this a year or two ago. It almost got me scared to fall asleep, but it stopped after about a week as quickly as it came. Probably stress.
