Relief from PHN

I am writing this as I have had a horrible experience of PHN and could get over in comparatively short time. I won't fool anybody by saying I am fully cured as the affected nerve get sore time and again. However it is bearable discomfort. I am not a Doctor. This simple treatment may help somebody to get relief as myself

I am man, 68 years of age having no health issues.Last year in July I have had an attack of shingles. The affected nerve was from right hip bone to back of the knee. The rash and blisters were healed in two weeks. however pain and burning continued. I was having regular allopathic treatment which started showing it's side effects as for neuralgia no separate treatment exists in allopathy except suppressing pain through medicines for epilepsy and anti depressant drugs. First I lost my whatever sleep I could get during the day or night, became too emotional, and depressed.

I tried all sorts of creams and drugs under Doctors' advise with no effect. Later my son sent me Terracil Cream from US which gave me a temporary relief for an hour or two after application. It was really a welcome relief but too costly as 40 gram vile was finished in one week costing $ 40/-.

All the time I was browsing on net for some cure and started applying coconut oil on affected area.

To my surprise pain subsided and got relief for about four hours on every application. Additionally I was taking homeopathic medicines Messerium-30 and arsenic Alb -30 three times a day. I still continue to apply coconut oil and able to do my normal routine since January 2014 as well as could drive 500kms. in a day. Even if somebody is having any other treatment try applying coconut oil. Probably you may get welcome relief.

Hello, sorry for delay in replying but i am very unwell. I relate a lot to what you say. You think you got it bad i have had no relief in 17 yrs. I didnt get diagnosed till a year later when i changed doctors as it was in my head, just above left ear. I have been on all those tablets, many painkillers, homeopathy and chilli pepper cream. Nothing is working and i feel worse when on them. I am so exhausted all the time,My eyes are painful so i have trouble on the computer, watching tv, or reading. Difficult going out by being so tired. I am a female 63. I have recently had a patch put on for an hour and am waiting to try for another. The problem is my hair is in the way. My sleep has been badly affected. After all this time i have had blood tests at Endocrinology dept for my thyroid and cortisol levels.I am waiting on these results. Think i have tried those 2 homepathic treatments. Will try and check. I live in scotland and nhs dont do homeopathic any more.

Results the hosp say are fine, altho borderline thyroid. Dont give anything for this. Been on an anti candida diet and gluten free. Lost a stone but head not any better. Pain a bit better but still have the horrible trickly, crawley sensations in head. Taking 5htp with magnesium, extra magnesium and pukka valerian with ashwanda. Still having trouble with sleep.

Can't take applying the chilli pepper cream, I think it's Zostrix?? It set my leg and ankle on fire, trying to wash it off in shower the water made it worse! Would the patch do the same? I've tried Lidocaine patch. Didn't help me much.

Thank you for the tip about the coconut oil. I will try it as soon as I can get some of it. I have the same situation, shingles on the back of knee left me with the nerve damage and severe pain from mid thigh to underneath heel and foot. This started 16 years ago, still have the terrible pain. I too have tried all the meds, do not take away the pain but helps a little. I hope the coconut oil works for me!

      Hi Patricia:

I am going to try the same.  I have been using a topical formulated with lidocaine/ketamine/gabapentin  plus I mix in voltaran and argan oil.  THe last items are over the counter and I think add a slippery layer that helps reduce skin to clothes contact.  I actually read about a woman that has it on her chest/breasts and had a medal cage built so that no clothes would touch her.  I had thought about that years ago but the area - torso and back - i would have to have a delak costume.   thx  jim

Hey Jim. Hope you are feeling better. I'm going to try to see my dr. And get a script for the topical formula you are using. There is a compounding pharmacy nearby, I'm going to ask if they have concocted anything topical for PHN. There has to be something out there that will help more than taking drugs that make you fell bad from the side effects! Maybe in the Amazon Rainforest??!

Those tubes cost me 600 bucks which is luckly covered by having a dual health plan with my spouse.  unfortunately i find it doesnt do much for the pain.  may have helped somewhat at first but i think one just gets use to the lidocaine.  i was even thinking maybe what the dentist uses but i know one can't apply that to large body areas continuously in any case.     my brotherinlaw is a radiation physicist and he says high level radiation to kill the first few nanometer thickness of skin.  now i looked into something similar.  i asked for to be burned or frosted to the point of killing the nerves.  supposedly there is a thermo obliteration process however i was told only rarely done and if the patient is absolutely terminal.  dr said the one patient lived longer than expected and the outcome was worse in that last living period than if they not had the procedure done.  however i haven't researched it any further.

right now i am on 100 mcg/hr fentanyl and 1 to 2 mg of cesamet (for breakthrough pain).  However once the surface pain starts there is no stopping it. Clothes comes off etc.   Regardless of the day i can never have sheets or blankets on me at night and have to sleep in one position given phn is on torso right side front and back ellipse that stops at the navel.  Interesting how the pain is within 1 millimeter - touch on one side normal a millimeter to the other and terrible burning pain.

I put on some coca butter (Queen Helene brand in USA not very expensive) since I had it handy.  Part of the area where I had the shingles was itchy so I am glad I did it.  Don't know if it will be a big help but can't hurt.  Thanks for your cheery note as I like to hear some good news.

Thank you for the tip, I'll try the coconut oil. I had shingles 4 years ago & now suffer PHN. in my side and across my abdomen. It comes and goes and quite painful at times.I am now on 600mg 3 times a day, although they do not have any side effect on me, thankfully i'm trying to get off them. And if the pain is just the same I would rather not take them? I'm 71 male and still working but must retire this year. That's the plan. However, I'll try the cocnut oil.
