Reluctance to go outside the house. Side effect?

i just wondered if anyone else taking sertraline has noticed a feeling of not wanting to go out? I had some issues with that before taking the tabs but now it's really bad. I hardly want to come out of my bedroom. It's like that weird appetite loss you get on this drug. I feel extremely detached and am tending to isolate myself. I know that is a common depressive tendency but it's just got so much worse since I've been taking sertraline. So just wondered if it was just me?

I decided today that this medication wasn't working for me. It did wonders for my sister in law so will do for some people. I have had masses of unpleasant side effects. Swollen tongue, upset stomach, swollen eyes, acne and boils, bad dreams, sweating, terrible hand tremors and a feeling of trembling all over. I am on my twelfth week of 50mg day with no noticeable improvements. So have decided to wean myself off them. The not going out thing really feels similar to that disinterest in food. It's so odd. Anyway hopefully I'll find something that will help me. Hope you do too. Thanks for your reply. X

Hi Dan, I have been on 50mg for 12 weeks. I have had all sorts of uncomfortable side effects. A few weeks ago I did start to feel a bit better but it's all a bit bad again at the moment. I will stick it out until after Christmas and then will try to eat well and cut alcohol right out for a while too. That doesn't help the medication work so I need to make sure I give that a good go. It's hard this time of the year to not drink. But new year, new me. So I will persevere and if they don't work I'll maybe cut down then come off. My sister in law and her cousin really benefitted from sertraline. They are fine now. So I guess they don't always suit everyone. Hope your symptoms improve.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting this - reading it has made me realise that this is exactly what is happening to me. I have spent four days now in bed and I have absolutely no desire to move or to eat. I am basically just existing. I've been on 50mg Setraline a day for a month and as I have started to have panic attacks over the past week decided to take 100mg today. It hasn't helped so far, I just feel very tense and reluctant to do anything. I don't know what to do.

Hi Caroline sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. It's really hard I know. The first month of taking setraline I also felt completely wiped out. I had absolutely no energy and wanted to stay in bed all the time. I changed the time I took my tablet to the evening which did help a bit. The tiredness is not so bad now but I still have this complete lack of motivation and my memory seemed very bad. I will say though that it did get better, but it's a bit up and down. I know a few weeks ago I actually felt normal enough to get up and go to the gym which was amazing as I haven't been able to do that for ages. I have noticed that if I drink alcohol I do feel more depressed so I am planning to avoid that as much as I can after Christmas. I will try to push myself out and to the gym. I have also signed up to a four week once a week instructive class. Which will I hope help me to unlearn my negative behaviour and help me control stress so I can combat my panic attacks. You can ask your doctor about these classes they are free. I went to a short presentation and decided what class would suit me. So that's my plan. Four weeks, January, no drink, eat well, excercise and the course. I'll keep you posted on my progress. I'm hoping it'll work. The lethargy and appetite loss is definitely a symptom. Wish you well. X
