Removal of both ovaries

Hello! I'm new to this site, I am going into hospital on the 25th May to have both ovaries removed as I have an 11cm simple cyst on my left ovary that twisted it has been monitored for the past year and has not caused me any further problems since last September when it twisted, my gyno recommends to remove it as it could rupture and they leek and he also said remove other ovary then I won't have to worry about getting anymore cyst, My question is should I have other ovary removed if it's healthy? Am also petrified of having op Iv never been into hospital before to have an operation!😩 I am 53 yrs old going through menopause Iv not had a period in over a year getting really bad night sweats and am really bloated don't know if this because of cyst.

Hi Sarah, this is the symptoms you get after your periods stop, the sweats & bloated feeling, I'm not sure about your ovaries as i have mine & on HRT. But before you know it the operation will be over so try not to worry i have had quite a few.

Thankyou for your reply, my doctor woulden't put me on HRT because of my age 53 and I'm a smoker but if I have my ovaries removed was wondering if I would need HRT??

I wonder why because of your age? If your ovaries are taken out you may need to go on estragen only HRT exclaim

If you still have a womb you need progesterone as well as estrogen as this protects the womb from thickening.

Hi I had my ovaries removed a year ago I was 51 and had started going through the menopause but after the op I suffered very badly due to surgical menopause, after months of struggling I went on HRT, my doctor refused to give it to me but my consultantant said he was happy for me to stay on it til im 60, within 3 weeks I felt great again so I would consider HRT if you need it after the op.

    good luck
