Removal of plate and screws

Has anyone had their plate and screws removed from the big toe?
After two and a half years and four ops I'm having them removed as they are too painful and making my foot swell, has anyone had problems after the removal of plate and screws?
Thanks

Hi,
Just a quick update, had the three screws removed yesterday. Am in discomfort rather than pain, inevitable since he opened me up all the way down the original site. Am bandaged up exactly as I was after the bunion surgery but have a flat boot this time as heel walking isn't necessary. I have been told that I now have to elevate for two weeks with only 5 minute walks in the hour at which stage the stitches come out. Really I am back to square one but my surgeon is very particular and others may not be quite so strict. It isn't easy to have gone back to this stage but he says that this will leave me back to where I was before I had the screws out except for a bit of up and down swelling in two/three weeks. I trust him and will stick to the rules as I want to be back to normal as soon as possible.
I will let you know how it goes when I have the stitches out.
Some surgeons may just go in above the screws but mine doesn't because this creates more scars, this means that I only have the one scar.
I have to say that other than the discomfort from the wound there is no pain in fact (unless the bandage is concealing it) the discomfort where the screw had moved appears to have gone. I will be able to confirm this once the bandages are off.
Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for letting me know Theresa, I'm wondering if the toe will now be floppy?!
strangely I am looking forward to having the metal ware taken out, the pain is far worse than the bunion. I understand what you mean by square again!

Update for you, had the stitches out Thursday and went straight back into a trainer. The scar is far less "scabby" than the original bunion surgery and I think will heal a lot quicker. The pain I had under the foot has completely gone, I have a strange twinge under the big toe but think that may be the bandaging I had irritating something and it already seems a lot better. The toes are really stiff again but loosening up a bit each day. There is swelling but not drastic and hopefully will get better each day. Start physio next week which will really give me an idea of how it is going so I will give you a further update again. I have been told to increase my exercise slowly.
So far all seems good and I am glad that the screws were taken out.

I'm not looking forward to the removal of the stitches again!
Have you got any movement in your toe? Since the first fusion I had no movement, looks like I have to wait until November for the op as there is a long waiting list.

I didn't have fusion as I do low level ballroom and latin dancing and couldn't afford to lose any motion in my toes so I have close on (not quite) the same as I had before. He did scarf and akin so fusion wouldn't be necessary.

I am having all the metalwork taken out because of the pain.

How did it all go? I’m having pain and swelling in my footpad and a click when I walk on the top of my foot and thinking it may be the screws. Removal in 2 weeks. Interested in hearing how you went and how it is now. Maria
