Removal of staples / clips

hi everyone

for those of you that had clips. Were they painful when they were removed?  I am only asking because I have never had clips and I don't know what to expect. I always have melting stitches so I can avoid things like this. Thanks 😀

I had 18 clips when I had my hip done and they didn't hurt at all they were better than stitches when they were removed. One or two stung a little but nothing much, I would certainly have staples again before stitches if the option was there. Love Gill xx

Hi Hailea, I hope you are recovering well and your pain is decreasing.

Derek say to tell you having the staples removed is painful, I was with him when the nurse took them out and he didn't flinch.  So don't worry.

We took Derek's crutches back today  to the Hospital and saw the nurses that were on his ward; they were really please at his progress. Thank you Dr Hossain and Fairfied Hospital

    Hugs from rainy Manchester.

      hi Hazel and Derek

so glad Derek is doing so well I am so pleased he has made a great recovery. That will be me one day.

Did id you mean not painful because you have written painful eek lol

i I saw another surgeon I had for my hysterectomy in the hall today. He said I looked great and was really pleased to see me. We had a bit of a chat and as I said to him at the time. What he did for me was the best thing he could have ever done and I still don't regret it.

I had clips 22 on both hips and just very slight discomfort when having them removed. was told by nurse to make sure you get them removed around 10 days after operation. If left too long they can be more difficult to remove. good luck x

      Hi Maggie

thank you for your reply. I have over 50 clips. This is why I am worried. Yes quite a large wound. My surgeon leaves them in for two weeks. So they will be coming out on Tuesday. It s two weeks for everyone.

Think i I may need some gas and air then lol

      Hi Maggie

      thanks for the reply

i am quite proud of my other scar from the first one that was closed with melting stitches so much easier. The clips were painful I guess because there are so many of them. Over 50 I have been told eek

    Hi Hailea,

I just had my 35 staples removed on Tuesday.  No problem whatsoever.....just a little pinch/sting once in a while.  I don't know if there's a difference in clips and staples, but the removal of my staples was quite pain-free.

not really, a slight pinch, some comeout easier than others .... not what I'd call painful, but then I didn't have anywhere as many as you.  At least having that many will mean the scar will be well sealed.  My first one leaked quite a bit as I suspect he had missed out a clip.

Generally it doesn't hurt. You might get the odd troublesome one but even that's not too bad. All over very quickly.

I had 73 clips following my last op! I wouldn't say they hurt when being taken out but some can pulled and feel a little uncomfortable. If they are pulling to much then chances are they will be left in a little longer

    Hello darling

We are a funny lot, aren't we ?   We suffered with OA pain , had THR surgery, some of us 2 and still we get squeemish about the removal of staples / clips - I was so not looking forward to it

The relief once they were out was so nice ....

      Hi Hailea

I have just read the thread the day you went on for op. I take it everything went ok? I had stiches that disintigrated and had no problem.

Can l ask why you are getting a brace?

      How you feeling now?

I get my 2nd op on 15th feb looking forward to it as want to get back to normal.

      Hope your ok

      Hi Laura

Yes it went ok although surgeon had to do more work than on the first hip because the joint was deformed. I had melting stitches for the first one and asked again for this time but he said he had to use staples because it was oozing quite a bit because of the extra work he had done.

I am am getting the brace to help my hip stabilise. Once the op is done my surgeon brings your legs together to see there is the same leg leangth

( which for me he says he has )  then he raises the operated leg up to test for streanth and stability. The joint is strong but because he had to do this extra work the joint is a little unstable till the muscles and tendons have chance to settle and knit back together. So for 6 weeks I have to wear this hip brace and I can only take it off for an hour once per day to wash and to clean it so I don't get sore. I then have to come back to clinics and have X Ray's in 4 weeks to make sure it is working correctly and the hip is healing like the other one did. If I do exactly as I am told the brace will make my hip be just as strong as the other one. If I don't there is always more of a chance of it dislocating because the muscles won't have healed in the right place to make it strong.

Oh l see glad to hear you are doing ok then. I just wondered why you had to have brace but if its gonna help you then l would do exacly as you are. I was glad when l came round and they told me it was stiches. I had a complication with the platlets in my blood they were borderline low and had to get my blood checked the morning of the op to see if they were going to go ahead. I was terrified l had pictures of me in my head bleeding to death as it means you blood does not clot right. But it seemed to have went ok l thing they gave me a transfution of platlets during my op . But l did not bleed any worse than anyone else. I was expecting staples because of this but to my releif i never. I hope my next one goes ok in 2 weeks l am doing everything possible to raise my platlets so that l am ok.

      Hope your recovery goes smooth.

      Take care

      Laura
