remove gallbadder or not to be removed??

Hello everyone, I've read all other replies of others having small to major issues on post gallbadder removal. Some patients are oppose to to removal but I can find the alturnaltives on meds for keeping it. The reason being is that soon I will face the disicion on whether to keep my gallbadder or lose it due to two large stones. I was told that if they try to break them up, some pieces may get caught up in the duct and cause more issues.  Problem my body will not handle open surgery due to the chance my cancer will spread. so only laparoscopic is the only opition.

Questions #1.. is there a way to remove two large stones without open surgery and keep my gallbadder?

Question#2..what are the side effects after the gallbadder is removed even if you have no large colon? my colon was removed 10yrs ago.

Questions #3..what are my chances of getting SOD after gallbadder removed?

Yes there's options for you, there is lithotripsy and dissolve medications. Both pretty safe to get rid of gallstones. Thing is you'll have to find a doc to do this. The stones hopefully will pass safely through the duct after that. There is cleanses also to help that passage. It all depends what you feel if your in unreal pain or the gallbladder is inflamed they deem it bad and take it out good luck

If your stones are large it is unlikely that they will respond to dissolving meds or be able to pass through the bile duct. Are you having symptoms or complications, do they definitely need to come out? Lapaproscopic removal is usually relatively safe for most patients nowadays. I'm not sure about how it would affect you re colon being absent. It is not very predictable who will get complications after surgery but about 60% have no problems it is said and only a small number of the remaining have lasting of severe ones. Not comforting if you were one of the less lucky, but you have to weigh up odds against the known problems you have now. Have you asked your consultant these questions? As they will know your individual history and be able to give the best picture for you. Good luck.

    Hi natmu .

i had my gallbladder removed by laparoscopy two weeks ago now and have to say up to now i have had no problems . im introducing foods slowly that ive not been able to eat for the last six month aand been fine. i was told by my surgeon that they dont remove stones only. because if you are prone to make stones then you will get them again in the future so the best thing is to have it removed . linda

Hi, Natmu, I'm sorry to learn that you're dealing with cancer as well as gallbladder issues.  There are many approaches to gallbladder difficulties.  I think it is important to remember that each person on this site has their own symptoms and problems, both before and after removal.  In your case, I would also be concerned about infection, which would further exacerbate what you already have going on in your body, including depleting your strength.  The presence of two large stones in your gallbladder can cause significant irritation.  Yes, there are those who wish they had kept their gallbladders and those who advocate that stones can be dissolved and gallbladders retained. But what worked or didn't work for them might not work for you. Though there are similarities, each person is different. You are in a partnership with your treating physicians.  You are doing what is best for you, including seeking information on this site.  But, none of us are doctors.  None of us have sufficient medical training to understand the complex process going on in your body.  That being said, I'm sure that all of us care deeply about you and will be thinking about and praying for you.  Please let us know what you decide to do and how you get on.

I've had two consultant's tell me that there is no reliable way of getting rid of stones. The NHS in the UK is at breaking point with many people having to wait several months for surgery. They would not remove gallbladders if there was a viable and safe way to remove the stones. That's just my opinion. I'm sure there are others who would disagree with me though. I'm due to have mine out in just over 3 weeks. I do not know the implications of having no large colon. I'm sorry. It sounds as if you have been through so much already x

I'm in the us a lot of docs here will try a non evasive way first to see if any medications will work. I've talked to my doc about it and luckily I didn't have super big stones. I just drank lemon juice for 6 monthes and did flushes. my grandma just had only her stones removed and she's fine and she had 2 huge egg sized ones. I really think it has to do with your doc And insurance you have, it's a big business ripping them out these days.

If you sont mind me asking, how did the docs remive the two egg size stones without removing the gallbladder? I would like to ask my docs to see if this is an optional before poking a hole in me.

I'm not sure I didn't ask her. She's like 84 and they tryed not to do major surgery . I'm sure there's a option if your gallbladder is ok ask your doc
