removing rods from thurasic spin after broken 3 virtebrae

I had a accident and broke my t4 t5 and t6 7 8 months ago. They put rods down my thurasic spin and I have a option to remove them. My spin isn't fused so I would get full movment back?. I'm extremly active with snowboarding and biking and in my late 30's. I'm just starting to get better now the muscles are strong and snowboarding was okay but the muscles are still struggling to back to normal with out tensing up somtimes. I can also feel the restriction in my movment. After a run when laying i can feel pain sometimes at the ends of the rods where the vertabrae conect. Should I have the rods removed?

I had cancer in T5 and the vertebrae was collapsing on to the sc when I was taken to hospital.  I think they had to remove what was left of it and maybe put another one in.

Never did find out.  Anyway they screwed two rods from T2 - T7 I suppose to support the spine eith side of the damaged bone.  I have no restriction of movement mainly because that part of the spine does not flex much because it is held rigid by the ribcage.  I can still bend over and touch my toes etc.

It will be two years ago on the 31st of this month since I had the fusion done and although I was lucky enough to get the movement back in my legs I still suffer severe pain in my back, muscle spasms, cramp-like pain.

I don't know whether you should have your rods taken out or not, but my first thought would be the less surgery one has in their life the better.

    Good luck whatever you do.

Thanks, my restriction in movment is very minimal. I notice whith yoga and sort extreme twisting motion. I havn't had my spin fused tho so I would only have issues with having anther invasive surgery. The doctor seems to be on the fence but  I hate the feeling of the rods in my back and feel some discomfort time to time where the rods end. My instinct says take it out, but anther surgery could casue more problems all tho unlikely, just more recovery.

The rods will obviously be restricting your movement and if the doc says it ok to remove them then I personally would, you may be able to go back to strength training once there gone to build up your muscles and help support your spine, if they had fused your back you would have no movement at all and probably be in pain, just make sure you get the pros and cons from your doc.

If anything make sure your not overdoing it, listen to your body, if it hurts slow down there's no hurry you will only do more harm than good, just remember if you take it easy you will get to your end goal without complications.

I wish you all the luck with a speedy recovery with what ever you choose to do. 😊

Thanks I feel like I'll be better in the long run with removing them all tho the surgery will slow me down by a good few months. The docs on the fence and hence why I'm seeking some more opinions. My gut says remove it.

Ye I understand it's a difficult decision, hopefully someone who's had rods removed will be able to help better, ask your doc how other patients have recovered and don't feel pressured into making a quick decision, find out as much info as possible, I wish you well 😊
