Renal Excretion tests

Posted , 3 users are following.

Long story short I got all these fancy blood tests done by an endocrinologist and my urine calcium/creatinine, renal calcium excretion, renal phosphate threshold and bone resorption markers are all out.

The calcium is low, phosphate is high and bone respiration marker is at 80 when it should be <50 pre menopause (I'm 24). I got them done July 2016 and she tried to tell me it was a lab error and get them done six months later. I just got them redone and they are exactly the same but again she just brushed it off and said oh just another lab error.

I have posted this in the electrolyte imbalance thread but thought I'd give here a crack. Anyone know what low calcium, high phosphate and high bone resorption marker could mean?

Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I can't answer your questions regarding why your results are all out, however what I will say is go with your gut.  Lab errors can happen but if the tests have been repeated and the results are still not what they should be then I very much doubt that it would be an error the second time.  I would ask why the lab results are wrong on tow occasions, what are the reasons for this? Does someone in the lab need re training?  I doubt it they are more than likely correct if the same results have come up twice with six months between them.  Ask for them to be repeated and if they are still the same you know that something is not right.  Perhaps see a different doctor who wil listen to your concerrns.  Don't give up as you know you better than anyone and it is your right to get answers.  I hope you get to the bottom of things very soon.

Thank you for your response. I asked how it could be wrong twice and she didn't really have an answer, just blabbed on about all this medical terminology that makes no sense to me. She said I look pretty healthy and you really need to know when to stop looking for things. She's charming! But she's not my endo anymore I am on the hunt for a new one. Off topic but I was seeing her originally for a benign pituitary tumour and she won't treat me for that anymore either. Another side note I was and still am under the care of a urologist for persistent utis and kidney infections so I am going to ask her if she thinks it's worth looking into.

Once I could accept a lab error but not twice. Especially as the bone one was only 62 last year and it's creeped up to 80.

I know something's wrong and I'm usually not this persistent about medial issues but I want to get to the bottom of it. Hopefully I find out some solid answers soon as I haven't been well for a long time - exhaustion, headaches etc among other things. I just don't understand why a doctor would not want their patient to be fully satisfied nothing is wrong or search every possible avenue to make sure something isn't seriously wrong. Her level of care blew me away.

      Hi,

If you have constant UTI's that are not treated as a matter of urgency, then this can affect your kidneys, this in turn affects your bloods.  Your kidney's control more than you think, phosphate is one of them, do you feel itchy at all?  This is one of the signs that your phosphate is high and it is easily fixed with binders that you have with food.  I would ask for a full blood count to be done, including kidney function, creatinine and U's and E's.  That way you can see if anything else is out.  Calcium is affected by your parathyroid which also goes wild when you have kidney issues or infections that is why the request for the bloods if you haven't already then you will see the bigger picture and you have something to go on.  Did you ever find the cause of your infections.  How is your blood pressure also? Could your tumor have come back?  Don't ask your uroligist, tell her you want it looking into as youare not happy.  What a rude and unprofessional thing for a medical professional to say to you, its like she is saying its in your head and you are right two lab errors I dout it! I would have asked her to put it in writing that there was nothing wrong with you, I bet she would have taken you seriously then.

Please go with your gut and keep going, better to find out you are ok than leave it and later down the line it cause more issues.  Please do keep us all posted.

The UTIs are being treated and have been investigated. No underlying issues I am just more suseptible to them.

      Timeline is...

Feb/March hospitalised for kidney infections and then referred to a Urologist. Treat with antibiotics for 3 months and had two cystoscopies to rule out anything sinister. Saw her last in June and said to come back in six months.

June (3 days after last Uro app) got told about the pituitary tumour and started treatment with an Endocrinolgist. This continued until last week when after that appointment I said no way am I seeing you again.

Just got out of my Uro app tho and she is the loveliest doctor I have ever met in my life. She hasn't seen me since the tumour diagnosis and she asked what had been happening and I told her and she said I would need to see a renal specialist or find another Endo soon. She said I should follow it up but she said the rest of my kidney function is normal. But she was so lovely and said she wasn't letting me go for 6 months and I'm going back to see her in March. She doesn't seem to think they are related tho.

I am itchy but then I start thinking am I itchy because I think I should be itchy or am I just itchy hahaha like a normal amount of itchy? It's confusing and so much has happened I don't even know what is normal anymore. Definitely sick of the headaches, dizziness, being tired and just generally feeling unwell all the time. I've never felt like this in my life.

I haven't had my blood pressure checked but I'm seeing my GP next week to get a referral for some new Endocronoligists. I will ask her to check! The tumour never went away, they found it in June and because it's classed as a microadenoma they can't do surgery and this endo said my prolactin isn't high enough for her to give me medication to shrink it so she just said she won't follow up the tumour.

So long of the short. Amazing Urologist Mean Endocronoligist haha. But I hate being made to feel like it's in my head and I shouldn't be worried about my own health.

I will definitely chase up a new Endo tho. I just want answers. Been going around in circles for half a year.

      Hi,

Go you, and it isn't in your head at all.  You will get to the bottom of it, it just may take time.  The itchy is not like when you are just itchy in one place and its not on the outside like a normal itch that goes when you scratch it.  Mine was on my front and back and it was like I was itching from the inside and no matter what I did I couldn't rid of it.  I would itch myself on my car seat, random objects out and about and it wouldn't go.  I must of looked very starnge you will know the itch I am talking about if you have it haha.  Please do kep us posted on your quest and never give up x

Thank you for that! I will keep an eye on my itching and make sure it doesn't get too severe.

I have done so much googling (which I know I shouldn't) and low calcium/high phosphate coupled with high bone turnover can signal kidney disease or that there is something wrong with your kidneys... The reason they found my pituitary tumour is because I was leaking "milk" from one boob and they first thought it was a tumour and then found it on an MRI but every doctor has said my prolactin level isn't high enough to be leaking and that they can't put two and two together.

It's currently 1am and I just sat up up in bed and was like nope I need to know if there are any causes for galactorrhea and there are a few one being pituitary tumours or kidney disease! I didn't even know it could be a symptom but now I feel like I have found a missing puzzle piece. It was the only thing that didn't make sense in the whole scheme of things...

Anyway sorry to prattle on but now I am even more concerned but not too much because all of my kidney function is normal on blood tests so I am very confused! But I won't give up and I will definitely keep you updated. About to go on a 3 week holiday overseas and I think I will try put all of this out of my mind until I return. Sucks going away without any answers but I'm sure it will be fine.

I will try for sure but only yesterday I got more blood work back and I am severely iron deficient also! I can't believe my bad luck and keep thinking "no more until I get back from holiday" haha. But no I definitely will try I am kind of glad I found a reason for my exhaustion though.

Thank you though I definitely need a holiday after all of this! I will worry about it all when I get back smile
