Repeated hernias

Hi

18 months ago I had a spigelian hernia repair. Everything seemed to go well until the following April when I was in a lot of pain around the site of the op. I subsequently found that I had 2 more hernias, a femoral hernia and an inguinal hernia. Both were repaired at the same time last August. It transpired that the mesh had come away from my 1st repair and wrapped itself round my inguinal hernia but this wasn't discovered until the actual repair was carried out.

Now I have similar pain and another hernia. My GP says that it is an incisional hernia and it is at the end of the scar from the last repair! I'm scared that the pain will become as bad as it was last year and worried for my job as I always seem to be off recovering from surgery.

How am I getting so many hernias? My consultant implies that it is because I smoke but surely that can't be the only cause!!!

Has anyone any ideas?

Hey Leslie. It took doctors 7 years to figure out i had a sphiglean hernia even though i have been telling them so.the first doctor found it and used a mesh for repair.the doc placed the mesh on top of my abdominal wall. Post surgery i was swollen really bad for about 9 months. Post surgery appointment i told the surgeon but he brushed off. At this point i have and still have rapid nerve twitching. It got worse, i was also having major muscle contortions. The pain was unbelievable. I visited my primary doc but he also brushed me away. So 3 years later i decided to try it again. This time thd surgeon placed the mesh on the underside of my abdomibal wall. Straight off day 1 i already felt great. However it is now close to 6 monhs sonce ive had the surgery and a lot of my pain is gone however, the other day i felt thd contortions trying to come back and that scared the hell put of me. After the 2nd surgery still not 100%. day to day feels like a finger is pressing into the wound site. This really put my life on hold it seems very hopeless and biggest worry is living like this. I may have to decline a job offer from the feds because i may not hold up in the academy. Good luck everyone with this issue.

    Hello,

I'm new here. I need to ask a question.

I was told that they couldn't fix the fact that the hernia patch adhered to my stomach wall and my intestines.

*Has this ever happened to anyone?

*If yes, What happened? Today my Dr. told me that I now have another hernia in the same place! I don't know what to do. Is it the doctors fault or the Patch?

    Can anyone help me?

    Thank you!

If you sit too much and particularly if you are carrying extra weight around your middle, that and the smoking are the problem. Although the first two are the biggest culprits, smoking is an irritant and can cause more acid to develop worsening the situation. Your stomach is most likely pushing up into your esophagus area so get to your feet and while standing, try drinking A LOT of water. At least two to three glasses. The weight of the water most of the time will push your stomach back down where it belongs which is below your esophagus.  My mother and I have had this problem for years and this helps both of us when attacks occur. Also try wearing loose clothing and bras.  Anything tight and constricting can cause an attack as well.

I now have hernia number 3. The first came 3 months after colin restruction. The next one was 3 months after that. This time is only 2 months since last repair. I do not smoke and have been very careful to follow the doctors instructions. I am so disappointed.

It turned out that I have an "atypical" abdominal wall.  All in all I had 6 hernia repairs in 3-4 years.  They have now strengthened the whole of the bottom of my abdominal wall and, touch wood, I've had no more hernias

They used 3 pieces of mesh to reinforce my "inguinal ligament" (?)  I can't remember the correct term now but it was from the crease of my legs round the front of my lowere abdomen.  They did one side at a time
