She tries to walk without walker but within 5 to 10 mins of walking and climbing 5 to 10 steps the pain rise up nd she straight goes and lies down on the bed out of pain. Sometimes she cries out of pain. Im totally disturbed, if i ask to doc about this, he says it will settle down gradually, can anyone help me about this. It will be very helpful for me.

Hi- we all heal differently depending upon a number of factors including age, weight, overall health, surgery and physical therapy. Your Mom is only three months out from bilateral knee replacement, and if she is having so much pain that she cries out, she is doing too much for her. A walker will help prevent a fall until she is stable enough to walk without pain. Pain is a way for the body to tell you to stop what you're doing and pay attention. Elevate, rest, ice, leg warmers, Epsom salt baths to relax muscles has helped me. I am eight months post op one knee and still have pain and stiffness daily as a lot of others have. I'm waiting until this knee recovers, seems like I a man in the twelve to eighteen month recovery group, before having the other knee done. Daily exercises are necessary within common sense. I take ginger and turmeric for anti inflammation and sparingly use Aleve. Read Chico Marx posts for great information. Good luck to your Mom!

Please let your Mom know the pain will decrease over time. I also suffered from arthritis and injuries from being a gymnast 50 years ago! I couldn't have my knee replacement until I was 66 and wanted to have them both done at the same time to get it over with. Thankfully the surgeon did not do that because I had an allergic reaction to the dermabond glue which caused a domino effect of complications. I spent the first 6 weeks immobilized in bed with a leg bent at 45 degrees. It took 5 months before my leg was straight enough to start standing and walking with crutches. So though I am 8 months post op, my activity level is that of someone 6 weeks post op. Your Mom is doing a lot more activity than many posts I've read! One thing that has been repeated here is not to overdo activity. Pushing too hard and suffering needless pain is not beneficial. The surgical pain will ease when we give our body a chance to recover and heal. It gets better! Best wishes for continued recovery!

I had my Right knee replaced 1 year ago.
The doctor said I would be able to do everything I wanted and be in no pain in 3 months, not the case for me!
You have to do your exercises, keep moving , until you feel pain, then stop, rest elevate and ice. I found massaging the knee helped too!
Lots of pain, crying, depression!
Itβs a tough road but for me, and when you read the posts here, everyone takes thier own time to heal.
Now after a year I am almost pain free, walk everyday, swim and do whatever I want to do! I still need to rest and ice sometimes when I over do.
I wish the best for your Mom
I hope she reads the posts on this forum, the wisdom and support from this group got me through my toughest moments!
Happy New Year!

Hello Vino,
First off let me commend you for being so concerned and caring for your mother! I'm sure she appreciates all the things you do to help her. It is very important to be positive and encouraging for your mother, because as you said, she gets depressed. Unfortunately, depression is most often, part of the recovery your mom is going through.
I am 71 years old and am 5 months post-op. I still have many of the issues you described your mother having, even a bit of depression. Knee recovery takes a long time for most, so having patience is very important for you and your mother. In time she will be able to walk further, climb steps, have less pain and actually be happy that she had the procedure.
Continue to be there for your mom, help her when she needs it and above all, make her laugh! Both of you will get through this journey and be stronger from the experience.
Stay strong, Vino, many blessings,
Cherry🍒

Having two knee replacements is massive! She will need to be very patient!
All excellent answers here already!
Read around this forum, both answers you get and older posts.
You can choose older posts by picking through the page numbers shown on the KNEE PROBLEMS main page. Look to the right of the page subtitle "All discussions in this group" and you will see page 1 but flick on the arrow to see other previous pages also.
It is important to try not to make any judgements about how long things should take. Everyone heals at different rates and everyone's bodies are different. I had one knee replacement and was using crutches at 8 weeks for any walking over five minutes....that was just ONE knee operation! It's going to take time. Is she having any physiotherapy and are you in the UK?

Hello. Had my left knee total replacement the end of Nov 17. Rest, elavate, ice whenever possible. Exercises are very important to increase knee &muscle strength. She can try massage scar area w/Vitamin E lotion. Some ppl use Alogen. Everyone heals differently. Hang in there!! Also, check w/Chico Marx on this site..he has great advice too
