Research in alternative methods to mesh?

Is anyone aware if there is any promising research going on that could result in a new recommended way for mesh repairs in the next 5-10 years, alternative to using mesh and steel sutures? The current method of mesh repair sounds like past century to me.

Ive been wondering the same thing. I'm not going to have this surgery until I have to because people that had this surgery has had to have multiple surgeries because once they start cutting the wall gets weaker causing more surgeries. If you hear of another type of surgery please let me know. God bless you.

Really? Wow...what is the re-occurrence rate with additional surgeries?

Try researching articles such as, NCBI reports comparing Moloney Darn versus mesh. The recurrence rates are not much different. I had my mesh removed and the Moloney Darn repair was used to fix the repair when the mesh was taken out. The doctor who operated on me to explant the mesh never uses mesh and his success rate is high.

It depends on the type of hernia you are referring to; for incisional abdominal hernias try researching Component Separation Technique or Component Release Technique. This approach does not usually involve using a mesh at all.

    Hope that helps.
