Restarting Citalopram advice.

I have been taking Citalopram for about 10 years i started on a lower dose then progressed to 20mgs . After my Medication review it was decided to try taper off them so was reduced to taking 10mg every other day.

I suffer with Panic & Anxiety Attacks and Citalopram took the edge off . Since taking them I've never had a panic attack where I've had to call an Ambulance though never fully cured me of having Anxiety I still get it but not severe.

I've been slowly tapering off my meds all September and last month in October I stopped so I've not taken them since.

I have been fine but noticed intense dreams , bloated stomach and twitching in my lip and eye not sure if they are withdrawal symptoms - last week i was feeling more and more anxious and could feel the intense anxiety feelings coming back ! I've been more paranoid , over thinking , irrational thoughts , worrying more and my anxiety is just getting worse . i feel even though i felt better whilst on Citalopram i wasn't because the anxiety wont be cured ! I feel i need to restart my medication on 10mg and slowly build them back up again but scared of side effects now i tolerated them well when i first started taking them - i have also booked to speak yo my dr but that's not for two weeks in the meantime I'm thinking do i restart them has anyone got any advice ?

Am I reading you right, you were on CIT 20mg for 10 years and tapered off over just two months?

If that's the case....far too quick my dear

Someone with more experience than me will be along to advise you soon......in the meantime, take care and all the best. They will look after you here 😃

Hi John yes I've been on them years ! I've had to restart them on 10mg and they will eventually be upped because i had some blood tests results back Friday and turns out i have iron deficiency and have to have further tests and my Health Anxiety has gone horrendous so yep I should have stayed on them stayed on them

Hi Dotty, It sounds to me that you have taken them away too quickly. You also say that you still had anxious feelings while on 20mgs . I'm wondering if you needed to up your dosage since you've been on them so long. Could that have been the case? I have stopped mine 2 times in the past and this is the 3rd time being on meds for panic and anxiety. Every time you stop these types of meds , you get the side affects that come along with them weather you are coming off or on them. This is just my experience. I hope you get some relief very soon. Take care 🙂

      hi there

thanks for your message i have been taking 10mg all this week and i will have to have the dose upped .

I had some blood tests back Friday and turns out i have iron deficiency - i am vegetarian and have been years but i had an Anxiety attack when she said i need to do a Urine Sample , have more blood tests for B12 and a Fit test for Bowel, Ive already had two FIT tests done and most recently was August just gone ! but i paid private because of my Health Anxiety and both Normal but dr insisted because she hasn't got on her records so i am bow thinking the worst and fearing and worrying so my Anxiety is in full swing right now ! 😦 I really need my Citalopram dose higher now been on 10mg one week so far

    Hi Dotty,

i would advise you to go on a withdrawal group on fb or on surviving antidepressants. They will be able to give you better info on all this and probably better than your dr.

    You are experiencing withdrawal.
