Restarting HRT
Posted , 3 users are following.
I have been on antidepressants for over 2 years and have tried to reduce them however my mood and anxiety returns very quickly. My issue is that the doctor has suggested taking HRT to see if this helps. i had a Hysterectomy in 2011 after which i used HRT for 5 years so am quite confused whether this will help. A major problem is that my sex drive is non existant so this is causing a major problem in my marriage at the moment. I am 55 and am not sure what to do, has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Sally,
Did the mood/anxiety start after stopping hrt or was it always an issue? I suppose hrt may help if it is caused by a lack of hormones, do you have any other symptoms? What did you feel like after stopping hrt? I can understand you wanting to come off or reduce your medication, these types of medication often do have withdrawal effects so it may be your mood/anxiety will level out after a while. I have experience of medication withdrawal and it was absolutely brutal. One particular medication took me a year to wean off! Slow gradual reductions is the way to go. However, it may also be your symptoms returning so either staying on your medication or taking a different approach may be necessary.
As for the low libido, I have read that women who take hrt can also benefit from taking testosterone for this very reason. We lose 3 hormones but only replace two. Seems bonkers really. Something to discuss with your doctor if you decide to go down this route.
