    Hey there Crystal 😃

So lets talk about what we know so far 😃

Edema is a medical term that simply means swelling or inflammation. Whenever any kind of inflammation is seen during an endoscopy, doctors automatically biopsy it. When I had my endoscopy, I had 3 biopsies taken from my esophagus and stomach due to inflammation. The nurse told me not to worry because she couldn't ever remember a patient undergoing an endoscopy who did not have at least one biopsy taken. It is common indeed.

Now in simple terms, our stomachs attach directly to our small intestines. The upper part of the small intestine is called the duodenum. In this upper part of the small intestine is the ampulla region which, simply stated, is the area where our bile ducts and pancreatic ducts open up into our small intestines and provide the necessary "juices" for digestion. Your doctor saw some swelling or inflammation in this area. That is all. Like any good doctor, she biopsied it. Perfectly normal procedure.

Now I understand what you are feeling and no doubt fear some kind of cancer. Firstly, cancer in this area of the small intestine is astonishingly rare, with a 2015 study finding it to account for only 0.5% of gastrointestinal cancers. Furthermore, the same study highlighted the major presenting symptom as jaundice, because the pancreas become "backed up." I have a sneaking suspicion that you are NOT experiencing severe or even mild jaundice 😃

Regardless of that, all this is assuming the worst case scenario which is not at all warranted by the evidence. Your doctor did not see a tumor or lesion or she would have talked to you about that in her report. Just some swelling. The best advice is stay off Google (except this wonderful forum!), trust your doctor, and trust God. This is all difficult, I know. But it is not impossible and you will come through this dark time. God bless you also and cheeeeers!

      Hey there 😃

There are numerous reasons why different parts of our stomachs/intestines could show inflammation. Often, there can be non-specific inflammation which has no underlying or nefarious cause. In my case, there was a patch of inflammation in my stomach that the doctor biopsied and the results were non-specific inflammation that the nurse told me was completely normal and would go away. There could also be ulcerations or infections that cause inflammation.

So until your doctor gets the biopsy results, there is no reason to believe that inflammation is anything concerning. And certainly, your doctor will be the best equipped to explain how to treat such inflammation. If you had presented several other symptoms such as sudden weight loss, jaundice, terrible abdominal pain, fever, or loss of appetite, your doctor would certainly consider your case more seriously in conjunction with the inflammation seen. This has not been the case. Furthermore, the report said that there was inflammation around the ampullary region. Taking this at face value, which one should be able too do seeing as procedure reports should be as minimalistic as possible for clarity, your doctor noted inflammation around the region. This does not necessarily mean the inflammation is being caused by something happening within the bile/pancreatic ducts. It literally could just be near the area 😃

So relax, be calm, and try have a peaceful evening. Everything will work itself out in due time 😃

Oedema means there is an inflammation in the region mentioned. I doubt it is anything to fear. The doctor I believe knows what to do. Talk to him about the result. I am sure you do get genuine assurances.

    Hey there 😃

So how are things going? What has your doctor said regarding results? If you are willing to share, that would be wonderful.

    Cheers 😃
