I need help understanding my results this was IGG test. HSV1 came back >5 and HSV 2 came back 2.30. The lab technician took another blood sample and sent it off for more precise test believing it was possible to have a false positive. I'm married in a faithful relationship I've had cold sores before and recently. What are the odds of a false positive HSV 2

If you've never had genital symptoms, then the odds are high that this is false. Retesing with the same test won't likely affect the results much. The University of Washington western blot is best in cases like yours, but that is pricey and more difficult to arrange. Which test were they going to do next?

She just said more specific and would give me a more precise answer. She wanted to test again believing that as I've had no symptoms of hsv2 that perhaps my body has antibodies due to hsv1 that could have given me false positive. My understanding is that all blood test basically just detect antibodies in your blood and that the only exact 100% accurate test is to swab a sore. But if I've never had any sores I don't understand what other test to take that would give me 100% accurate diagnosis.

She also stated that due to my low level in hsv2 result it could be a new infection. Which I don't understand due to the fact that I was recently married year ago and have been in monogamous relationship for the past 4 years. My wife was a Virgin before me and I've no doubt in her faithfulness to me. So I don't understand how I could've had a recent infection. Unless she had a cold sore while giving me oral or me giving her oral. Can hsv1 turn into hsv2 if you give oral with a cold sore

Your doctor is correct. You clearly have HSV1 somewhere, probably orally even if you don't get symptoms, and that can throw off the HSV2 results in some cases, especially if using the HerpeSelect test kit. Your HSV2 score isn't very high and with no history of genital symptoms but with pre-existing HSV1, it is very possible that it is false. The best test would be the UoW western blot, or perhaps another HSV2 test kit (not HerpeSelect).

No, HSV1 is always HSV1 wherever it is located. Same applies to HSV2. One type cannot turn into the other. I doubt the HSV2 is a recent infection, more likely a false positive. The HSV1 you've had for a while, anywhere from a few months to a few years or longer. Many people carry it orally without symptoms.

Thank you for all your help she told me I should have results by Friday. If I've another low positive then I'll order the blot test. But fingers crossed it was just a false positive
