Retinal Tear Laser Surgery

Posted , 66 users are following.

I recently went to a retinal specialist because I was getting some flashes now and then and a lot of floaters and she told me I had a retinal tear that actually had tried to repair itself but said she would do the laser retinal repair surgery to prevent it from opening. The doctor acted as though it was very low risk and I went a long because I feared any vision loss and I didn't think there were common complications. Since the laser a few days ago I have this blank black/gray spot in my lower peripheral. Sometimes I see it more than others like in certain lighting or if I'm moving my head a lot. Sometimes it even just looks like a little light. I told the doctor about it and she says she thinks it's from the inflammation from the laser and should resolve but there might be a chance that the spot will remain but I'll only see it if I try to look for it and most people don't notice it. I notice everything however and I am only 24 and have good peripheral vision so it's a big deal for me. I was wondering if anyone had this experience and saw the spot and over time it disappeared. I saw a post in another forum that someone had the cyro procedure, saw what sounded similar to what I was seeing and it eventually disapeared. Any comments on experiences with this retinal tear laser would be helpful. Thank you.

Hello Rosie I have exactly the same effect you are have eye shimmering I had a retinal tear on the 24th October and since the lasering I have the constant eye shimmering/lightning bolts in my eye do you mind if I ask you.

    1. When you say it got slightly better how much ? or does it depend on the day/ how your physiology feeling that day?

    2. Does it create any pain ?

    3. Are you able to relax atall such as sit and watch a film or sit outside and relax honestly? Like I said I'm going through the same thing and even if it's only some times that's would be useful  knowledge

    4. What have you noticed makes it worse or better ?

    5. Last one, even if it's not getting better are you coping more even if slowly. Thank you

6.what time of the day is it worse ?

if there anything else you think I should no please do share thank you I'm here saying I no how it feels smile

      1. So it got slightly better in that the static/shimmering isn't so bright as it was when it first started and there is a little less static going on in the area but it's been very gradual and small improvements. It all depends on the lighting for me and where my eyes are looking but it's constant and always there

      2. So I've had an ongoing sinus infection that I can't get rid of and this has been going on before my eye issues. Because of that and where my tear was (inner corner of my eye) I have pressure in that area. I was afraid that the laser did cause pain there bc it seemed like after the laser I was having more pressure/tightness there but I think with the instrument the retinal specialist used it must have push the infection/mucus I have more into that area bc supposedly we don't have pain receptors at the back or the eye. Also. I get similar pressure/tightness near my other eye so I do believe that it's probably my sinuses. Sorry I know that sounds gross so While I don't think I have pain from the actual laser I can't be 100 percent sure I guess until my sinus issues clear up

      3. Between my sinus issues and now my eye issues it's actually really annoying that I feel like I can't just relax and watch a move without noticing the flickering. Usually in bed I lay on my side and so I can cover that portion of my eye so I don't notice it but staring straight is annoying for me because of the flickering. Although I do think it has slightly got better since it began so there's hope. I get what you're going through. It's really been depressing me to deal with and sometimes I wish I never got the laser bc I had no idea this was a common side effect

      4. I don't think anything that I have done makes it worse or better. I was taking eye vitamins for a while but they seemed to have no effect so I stopped. The lighting in the room affects what it looks like really. More static in bright lights. More like a glowing light in dark environments. I don't really notice it so much when I'm moving around but when I focus my eyes it's distracting.

      5. Eh I have my good days and my bad days. It really has depressed me dealing with it and a lot of times I wish I never got the laser and just took my chances especially bc it was an old year. When I'm on my lap top a lot and it's very distracting when typing or concentrating in class. I think the only thing that keeps me hopeful is that it has slightly improved so I'm hoping over time it completely goes away.

      6. Time of day doesn't really matter so much. Like I said above it's more so about the lighting

I hope I was helpful ! You're not alone. This has been so frustrating for me. I hope shimmering gets better for you and becomes less distracting. I have thought of possibly using an eye patch for a little while but idk if that would do any good or make things worse. Feel free to ask me any other questions.

Thank you very much for answering back I appreciate it, when you say it's got. Slightly better do you think that is wishful thinking and you getting used to it? Or Are you pretty sure it's getting better but very slowly. Have you ever had a day where you don't notice it ? Mines on the left eye on the left hand side so facing the world so it's on everything. I don't know whether I would rather have itt in between the  skin or what I have . What I have found is the reason it's hard to find anybody else talking about this symptom online is where we had the tear its near/ on the ora serrita and they are not spouse to laser that part. So it creates this affect, mine creates awful pain also. What I have noticed makes it worse and better is light the more light there is the more it will get worse. Try when it is getting bad go into a pitch black room for ten to twenty minutes and see if it calms down mine does. Also I did where an eye patch and I think it's a bad decision because we need it to get used to it. Have you broken down because of it ? Sorry for so much but I really need to no.

Sometimes I wonder if it is wishful thinking or it has gotten better, but the best way for me to test this is in the car when Im driving and I do think theres is less going on in the area that got lasered if that makes sense (less shimmering I believe, less static). Ive never had a day I dont notice it. It is a contant, but the lighting always determines how I see it or how much I see it. I see it even when its dark, it just looks a little more like light in the dark, more like static in bright environments. I probably wont try the patch thing bc its gotten better to the point it doesnt bother me as much when I have my head faced down to read, but still bothers me when looking at my laptop. No need to apologize for asking questions. I have many times gotten depressed over it. Along with my vision issues and my sinus issues (I constantly have pressure in my face ) that I still have not been able to get under control its been a difficult time for me.

also could you tell me more about the tear being on or near the ora serrita and why that would be causing this effect? I've never heard of that before

    • Posted

Hello thank you for getting back to me again, why is driving the best way of testing ? So you never have it turn off mine calms down if I'm in the pitch black for 20 minutes. Btw I think your an inspiration to me the way you carry with your life is amazing this has  halted my life as the static lightning can be so in vasive, the more light it consumes the more it get worse and worse so if I go out into the day an hour in I'm a mess because it gradually gets more and more bad does yours do this ? Also I think stress makes it worse. I'm thinking about getting rid of my eye it's that bad. The pain is like stabbing and aching altogether aswell. Mines from 11oclock to 5oclock anti clockwise in my eye good way of  analysing. Have you ever found or heard of anybody else getting this or possibly getting rid of it ?

      2. It's just a theory of mine considering so many people get tears and get it lasered wouldn't they all have this affect if you look on a eye diamgram the ora serrita is very close to where I had my tear and they are not supposed to laser there do you no if your tear was near there or not ?  Thank you again

ps. How do you keep yourself going any pointers smile

I just think its the best way since my head is in the same straight position while driving. No mine never turns off. Its constant. Thank you for thinking of me as an inspiration, but it definitly hasnt been easy. Many times I get very depressed and regret doing the procedure since this static in my vision is so annoying and distracting. Honestly, the only thing that keeps me going is hoping it will improve because I think it has so far. Sometimes when im doing work on my computer I cover it by putting my hand in a way that covers the area (down by my nose). Not sure what else to do to help. I wish someone who actually had it go away would see this and comment. Im not sure if the tear was in that area. I will try to look at an eye diagram and check

      Hi Rose,

I think we need to help each other fix this situation! Mine is becoming progressively worse and I can't figure out why, I think it's crucial for both of us to find a way of getting rid or even relaxing our symptoms, as I have in the past but I can't figure out yet how I did. Because you are the only person in the world who's going through the same thing as me, I'm sure we both should keep in steady contact, with theory's,questions and ideas on how to improve it. What I'm going to try and do is not using my eye for a while to see if it calms it down, next I will try and get my stress and anxiety levels down, through meditation, this will help us both out. I need to know do you suffer from anxiety or depression? And is light honestly the only way it gets worse or is there any other way? Also another "THEORY" I have is the more consciously aware I am of it the more I see it. The last thing I'll ask is these questions I'd like you to answer:

      1. As soon as you wake up is it there? Or does it slowly ramp up and get worse?

      2. Does the more light it consumes the worse it gets?

      3. If your emotional state is low does it get worse?

4.do you ever have days were you don't go out because of it

there's  hope in us helping each other and corresponding! Sorry this was so long and I'm looking forward to you getting back to me! When your feeling down just think I'm out there knowing how you feel!

      King regards,

      Grant

      Hi

Thank you for stating you also suffer anxiety and drepression. I experience both.

I had laser surgery on 28 december for a tear.

I had been discharged from the eye clinic last week.

I still have floaters, which have been informed these will not fade.

My eye feels like an alien and wobbles making car travel extremely uncomfortable.

Has anyone else had the eye wobble.

If so how long does it last?

      Hi

The right eye, which had the tear, when travelling in cars, actually wobbles, i feel the sensation. If travelling far the pain is really bad.

The consultant informed me it is my brain telling the eye to vibrate!!

I am still experiencing a lot of shaďowing in my right eye and would really appreciate if this is normal.

Visiting the eye clinic i was told i worry and to go home and resume a normal life, having said that i was not examined at that stage.

I feel like a recluse and have gone from a outgoing person to now dont want to go out, love to travel but this wobble has put paid to that.

Don't let anything stop you from doing what you want, acceptance is key, if you fully accept this is happened to you and you get over it the fear of it will go away and you become accustomed to it, now I'm not saying this isn't hard but life is so quick and never has a promise card tha things like this won't happen so you have to go forward. Im Trying myself

thank you I hope it stops or you get over this situation

i will have to get over the fear, do you drive as i would really like to try,

do we have to notify insurance etc. would probably prefer to try in the dark, as the shadowing is less noticeable in the dark.

I appreciate your comments and really hope you find things improve for you too.

Hi, sorry I havent been on here in a while. I've deal dealing with my horrible sinus pressure and sinus infection issues (the treatment for which started all my eye problems: I'm pretty sure the Flonase or levaquin I took or the combination contributed to my retinal tear) but anyway, I still have the flickring and its been over a year now but I do believe it has gotten better (not the point I dont notice it anymore: I still notice it every day) but i feel like it doesnt take up as much of my vision and isnt as bright if that makes sense. I think our brains constnatly believing/knowing it is there has a lot to do with us seeing it constantly since we look for it, but its obviously in my vision constnatly so I cant jus make it go away or not think about it. i hope the wobbling has gotten better for you too. i can only hope for continued improvement and I at least have to be thankful I have vison in that eye and I only had to have laser even if I do have this  annyoing flickering

Sorry I haven't been on here in a while. I don't think it's necessarily worse in the morning or any time of day. In the dark it looks more like a flickering light and in bright lights it looks more like a flickering shadow static so not really better or worse just different. I hope it has gotten better for you and you have found ways to cope with this. Sorry I haven't replied. I've been dealing with other health issues and haven't gotten on here

      Hi

I have been following your comments, since joining the forum. I am sorry to hear you have suffered with sinus problems. Very painfull on top of the retinal tear.

It is so helpful to hear everyone here has more problems than the consultants admit to. When going to checkups they make me feel stupid to mention all the side effects i have had since the laser treatment.

However this next checkup next week, i can safely say others are in a similar position.

I do agree vision is not as bright on certain days, and on waking up in the morning you know what sort of day its going to be. Is that the same for you?

The wobbling is vety annoying, but again some days are better than others. However, life as i knew it is not the same.

I luckily haven't had any issues with my vision not being bright enough. Just the annoying flickering static in that eye but I agree they act like your problems are no big deal. I know how you feel. Since both my sinus issues and eye issues I feel like I've been living in a fog. It's just awful rolleyes I hope the doctor listens to you and possibly has some more answers. I wish they had better treatment for eye problems.

      Hi

I agree there should be better eye treatment in this age with advances in medical science, i feel eye treatment should come further up the reseach ladder. As the saying goes the eyes are the window for life.

I feel for you having both sinus and eye problems.

I have no faith in the eye cnt, i know i will be taken off their list, even though my optican has written to request they keep me on .

    • Posted

Im sorry to hear that. where you live you have to be on a list to see an eye speciaist?

      Hi rose

Yes, i have been discharged once, but went to the optician to buy perscription sunglasses , he checked my eyes and wrote to the consultant requesting i have further tests, so got into the eye clinic by the back door.

So far i have not been discharged since. But he keeps coming up with other options, my wobbly eye is due to the jelly round the retina have turned to liquid. The last visit it is due to having a mole at the back of my eye

    • Posted

Im wondering if the gelly around my retina is starting to liquify as well =/ I'm from the US so luckily I can go whenever I want. I dont get why they would not agree to keep you on the list especially when you are having ongoing vision issues. i would think they would do multiple check ups throughout the year

      Hi

Not certain what makes the jelly turn to liquid. Only that this was the explanation the consultant gave me for the wobbly eye. He said it just happened sometimes. I wish i had not had the retina tear repaired. All the side effects are so awful, with the floaters and sometimes i have great difficulty opening my lasered eye on a morning. That is because i have dry eyes, i have been told, although i use dry drops on at regular intervals during the day.

I worry what they will come up with next, after having a mole behind my eye.

I sincerely hope in the future there will be better treatment for the younger patients of retinal problems, my heart goes out to all of you in your twenties and thirties.

      Hello Gkitkman

Reading your post i felt i am the exact case like you.

My whole life changed after the laser for my tears.

I am constantly in pain, and i mean constantly. There's no peace, over and above i was left with horrible residue of dense floaters.

Anytime i meet someone at the ophtalmoligist with tears i ask them if they have the same side effects, most of them are satisfied with their vision, while i'm pretty much a mess. Don't know if there was a possible cure fot at least the pain.

While most of the doctors pretty much leave you on your own to deal with it, this forum makes me feel i'm not alone in this world.

      On Jennifer how awful!!!

What pain are you in? What have the doctors said about the pain?

    • Posted

      Hello hol

I have seen 3 different dictors(ophtalmologs) no one was able to explain the cause of the pain.

I am seeing a neurologe on the 23 rd, and hope to check the orbit and find an answer there.

Thank you for asking, wish you all the best.

      Hi jennifer

I too had awful pain, i explained it like having an alien eye. My laser treatment for a tear was in december. I hope it helps but the pain in the eye does improve and now i dont noitce it at all.

      Take care

      Hey gkirkman94,

Since your symptoms and explanation seem to be the closest to mine, I would love to know how you are doing now 8 months later.

      Have your symptoms decreased?

Have you found a way to cope with the visual changes?

I hope your symptoms have improved! Hope to hear back.
