Returning to work effects

Hi Hippies

I returned to work this week. Phased return after 12 weeks off after LTHR.

I am a teacher in a prison which involves a lot of standing up and walking around. I also have a 40 mile round journey to get to work and back.

My hip is healing well and I have managed to go on long walks and do plenty of road cycling without to many aches and pains afterwards.

However when I have arrived home from work each day this week both of my legs ache like mad.

I am wondering whether any other hippies are experiencing, or have experienced this problem; and if they have for how long can I expect it to continue please?

By the way I am 65 years old which I suppose must be a factor. However I have led a very active life and consider myself to be very fit for my age.

I shall watch this thread with great interest as I go back to work next week. Good luck with the recovery!

I have been at work for 2 weeks now, aged 63, desk job with computers.

I had primary total hip replacement at the end of october, and revision on it in January.  So I was 12 weeks post revision, 22 weeks off work and post primary replacement.

I work in London, so have to commute, which I do very early in the morning, so I get a train seat OK.  The tube is fairly packed, but I have managed (despite some very selfish women grabbing the seat marked for those less able to stand) to get a seat.  Buses have been no problem at all.

My employer has been very good, with a three-day phased return on part-time hours, building up slowly to full time.

I am finding it very tiring, I snooze on the train home, collapse into my recliner and sleep some more, and go to bed early.  Hopefully it will get better, but at the moment I really need those rest days in between just to recover and recharge my batteries.  I am even thinking about doing reduced hours from now until I retire or a phased retirement.

      Thanks for the reply Graham

I never had these aches before the op. I hope its not an age thing, and it does improve

otherwise I haven't got much to look forward to!

Nothing to offer I'm afraid but I'm in a similar position. I'm a college lecturer and I too have a 40 mile round trip to work. I'm currently 6 weeks post op but don't see my surgeon again until the end of April. I feel like a fraud as I feel fine in myself (certain things I can't do) and feel like I should be thinking about going back to work. I'd be interested to hear what others think, as I'm beating myself up a bit. I'm 46.

Iam finding a seat that I used to dind comfortable isn't any more, it rubs my scar, as does my car seat - so I use a spare cushion to raise me out of the 'well'.

    hi david,

wow ..... 12. weeks post-op, back at work teaching

, long commute, walking, cycling. ..and you wonder why your legs ache. ...

you know that you had major surgery, right. .And a lot of healing is still taking place. ..

your body is telling you that you are probably doing too much. ..

try to slow down a bit ... did you have the posterior or anterior method? 12 weeks is still early days in recovery.

    big warm hug

You are right of course Renee but it has come as a surprise to me the effects that travelling to and being at work for half a day has on both my legs; not just my operated leg
