Revised goal - balance between side effects & pain

Back to the doctor's today ....too many side effects from the oxcarb...similar to the side effects I had with the carbamazepine.  Doctor gave me the choice of trying Dilantin or going back on the gabapentin which I tolerated but like all the drugs pain would keep on coming back two days after each increase.  I am going to take 48 hours to clear my system and then go back on the gabapentin really slowly.  The goal is no longer to be pain free but to reach a balance....to have the pain tolerable and the least amount of side effects.  So far I have been lucky, except for at the onset I have not had many of the electric shock like pains, mine is more of constant heavy pain that ranges in severity.  Hopefully this will all work out

Thanks.  I am really questioning the benefits of taking meds....do the meds just numb the pain ...or...do they prevent the pain.  If I do not take the meds will the pain progress, be worst?  I can't seem to find the answer to this.
