Revision??

Hi all

Some of you very caring people have asked for me to let you know how I got on with my surgeon today and the result could be a lesson for us all.

Just to recap: I was 12 wpo and doing fine and had worked up to walking for an hour swimming forty lengths and static biking for 20 minutes everyday. Then I developed a pain in my thigh about 2/3 down. Looking up various sites and talking here on this site told me that it could be muscular an infection, it could be, worse scenario, a loosening of the prosthetic stem tip or a bone crack.

Well the good news after my X-ray was that it wasn't, as far as he could see, the last two. YIPEE!----didn't fancy a revision

However it would appear that I may have overdone the exercising and here's the rub. We are told to exercise but not to overdo it but how do you know you've overdone it until you actually overdo it.

Nobody can answer that question because we are all different. I wasn't doing anywhere near my usual amount of exercise pre op and felt I could do more so I did.

One other possibility. Towards the end of the consultation I happened to ask if taking statins could have anything to do with it. "Ah"he said." I thought you had been on them for a long time" no less than a year. It could be the answer after all. So I have to see my GP about them. Statins can cause muscle pain if so that could be a simple answer to my problem but there again may not

So basically I still don't know the route cause of the problem only that I have to stop all aerobic exercise for 3 weeks.

If only there was more attention to post op monitoring

Both my sister and husband get horrible leg pains on statins. My husband would wake up in the night from the pain. Stopped taking them, pain gone. My side effect from them was a weird wobbly feeling in my knees. None of us take them any more.

It's true that we don't know how much is too much in terms of exercise until the damage is done. If the pain does go away, you could try being even more moderate in how much you do for a good while - months - and see how it goes. Then gradually add more and maintain for awhile each time.

Hope it turns out to be something as simple as stopping statins or recovery from a muscle strain!

That's what I hope as well Annie. I have been told to stop all aerobic exercise for 3weeks. Thanks for the info about the statins. I'm hoping it's going to be as simple as stopping taking them. How long after did the pains stop for your husband and sister?

It was quite some time ago, so I'm not positive, but I think it was fairly soon after stopping them. I'll check with them later!

Colin, my husband just told me that it was only his knees that hurt while he was on statins. They hurt so badly he was thinking he'd need them replaced. But within a week or two after stopping the statins, he had no more pain at all.

I know this isn't the same kind of pain you are having. I have read, though, that some side effects for people with statins include leg muscle pain.

      Hi mick

What problems did you have with the bike. I reckon my probs were caused by pushing too hard on the bike

    Hi Colin,

    Thank you for sharing ...

I personally experienced the statin side effect of pain in legs to a point that I collapsed - This was years ago (2003) - I stopped and the pain stopped within 24-48 hours - Even the "natural" cholesterol lowering supplements have statin-like ingredients ... I tried them (red rice etc.) same effect -

The exercises ? yes, toss up ... when is too much too much?

PT wants me to push through the discomfort, tighness and challenge my self more - I end up with painful and very tight muscles in upper thighs, around knees, and hips -

The thing is that while doing them, you know, the walking, exercising, getting in- and out of the car, all that goes almost effortless ... but ooooo boy, after wards !!

DId that yesterday and now even my scars hurt !

    YIGH !!!!

    take care

    big warm hug
