Hello,

I am due to have a revision mastoidectomy and obliteration in 6 weeks time.

I know all about the operation however I was wondering if anybody else has had this done and how long recovery was.

Trying to work out roughly how long I will need off work.

Many thanks

Sam

Question: Why the obliteration (bone graft)?

i had mastoidsectomy and tympanoplasty surgery in March 2019. Staples were used for the wound.

2-3 weeks off work, I went to work on reduced shifts after 2 weeks and really it was too soon as the staples were still in because the wound hadnt closed.

My advise would be to expect 1 month off work. My nerves have been shot since the op so know in advance, the recovery might have some painful moments.

After surgery your head will probably be in a compression bandage. Dont be a hero on pain relief... take it and too up because when the local and general anethetic wears off, it does hurt. Dont be worried about blood oozing from the wound, its fine. Dont get it wet (gonna stink for a few days with a lovely sink wash).

Ive had complications in terms of nerve probelms and tube dysfunction... the pressure doesnt equalise thus bulging the ear. I need to go back to ENT Drs
