REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

Posted , 385 users are following.

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM".  The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc".  You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up.  I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now.  I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday.  As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens.  Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them.  It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue.  My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

    Hey guys,

i hope this will be fine by everyone as i am here on behalf of my partner (so hoping this is female friendly zone:)), he is very stressed these days with needing to decide on what to do, and i feel like s**t that i cant help.

He has been with a permanent (not self) catheter since out of the hospital its been a month and a half i believe.

Our biggest concern is erection / ejaculation issues. on the other hand one Dr told him that his kidneys are in danger if he doesn't perform a Turp+Tuvp (?) as anything other than that wouldn't be safe enough for later on. another Dr said do laser or try to take meds (since he got nervous about the procedure). he tried one pill one time so far and fainted(!):

I've just read today about Holep and rezume and have no idea.

Any advice would be more than welcome.

    Best of luck to everyone.

      Adi,

You need to provide more information.

      How old is he ?

Does he have BPH or cancer ?

How long has he had the condition ?

How large is his prostate (in CM or grams) ? It can be measured by TRUS (Trans Rectal Ultrsound) or 3TMRI

Does he have enlarged median lobe ? It can be seen by cystoscopy, or 3TMRI

What meds did he try, Tamsulosin, Avodart ?

Has he tried self catheterization ? It sounds unpleasant but it is not, many of us here do it.

Self catheterization would solve his problem at least long enough to figure out what he wants to do. I learned how to do it at a Urologists office, and they gave me catheters to take home, and a prescription for more, that was three years ago.

This is to everyone. I had a TURP back in 2013. Been peeing somewhat ok since then with a lot of ups and downs. It got to the point where I have only been emptying about 50% and decided to move forward with the Rezume procedure after having a cystoscopy and my urologist saying there appears to be tissue that does not belong.

So got it done a week ago. I had the blocker done (numbing my prostate) which wasn't nearly as painful as I expected but still no joyful experience either. The procedure itself sounded like my prostate was getting tased by a taser. It was probably just as painful. I can't even imagine how some guys can do this without the blocker. My doctor told me that I should be fine without the blocker but the Rezume rep recommended it so I took his recommendation since he is the expert. Still hurt like hell. When they were done and attached the leg bag and I stood up, the bag very quickly filled up to 1000cc. I couldn't believe it. I didn't even think my prostate had that capacity and didn't even feel like it was full. THAT's were the problem begins. They sent me home with the bag and said I could remove the bag and just use the plug and unplug whenver I needed to go. Problem is, I lost sensation of having a full bladder and have no urges or contractions. Fast forward one week later (today), they removed the foley and I cannot pee. Ok, one drop. That's it. Also, I cannot get an erection. Not even a partial. It's DEAD. At this point, I now have to self cath which for me, for some reason is absolute agony when I feed the tube down my urethra, it stings like fire. And a 10 minute ordeal getting past my prostate. I'm hoping over time, things will improve including my erection but I am kind of worried. Anyone have any insight?

      Roso,

One week is way to short to see results from Rezum. Most people on this forum don't break even for at least a month and some take up to 3 months or longer. Self cath after Rezum is painful because of the trauma to the urethra and prostate, otherwise it would not be painful. A foley catheter might be better for the first week or two, because you would not have to insert and remove it.

Thanks for your reply Thomas. Here we are now at 3 months. I have basically worn a Foley for the past 3 months. They took it out a couple of times but the pain was so severe and so little came out, I ended up in ER that night getting a new foley put in. It always started out good in the doctors office when the foley was removed but I guess that was because the channel has been dilated from the catheter but as the night progressed, things just closed up.

It's out now for a few days and I can only pee 150cc then it just stops. A few minutes later, a little more comes out. After about 20 minutes, I pretty much max out at 300cc on a good session. I get up about 4 times a night to pee at about 15 minutes each session.

It's pretty much my same deal before Rezum but a little worse. I feel like my bladder has been stretched out and has less strength than before. I'm also pretty sure by bladder is part of the problem before Rezum. I believe it is neurogenic or partly flaccid. I don't have any solid answers even though my doctor is the best I have found in 10 years of this problem and probably around a dozen different urologists.

I believe things started improving when I started taking Turmeric 3 x day. But still not as good as before the procedure.

Also, no more morning erections despite 5mg of Cialis a day. Solid every morning. And only partial erection when I masturbate. I had no problems before the procedure.

I had the rezum procedure done Feb. 27 , 2020 and had nothing but problems. I would not advise anyone to get it done. When I complained to the dr. he told me it was all in my head. I lost the ability to get an erection, my ejaculation's is reversed. I had 5 weeks of infections right after it was done. The Dr. told my new Dr. that everything went fine. My new DR is doing all he can but I am still at a loss. If anyone wants to ask me about the procedure they can contact me.

I was able to get erections and had a active sex life before this procedure but now I must give myself injections to get an erection, but I still can't ejaculate. My present DR thinks there was some nerve damage done during the procedure.

      BobnLA,

Who was the doctor that did your procedure ? Where was it done ? Do you know how many Rezum he had done before you ? Some on this web site recommend finding a doctor who has done at least 50 of any procedure you want done.

It is unusual to have nerve damage from Rezum because the tool only injects steam near the urethra.

It was done in Lady Lake Fl. by James Young. I was told by him he had done over 800 of these procedures. My dr. now is not too happy with what was done and all the problems I have had.

      Bob,

I considered having resume done by JY in Lady Lake Fl May 2018. He had done 300 hundred, which was more than anyone else in the US, at that time. He told me he would do 200 seconds of steam in the prostate. That would be 22 injections at 9 seconds each. When I heard that I thought I would have retrograde ejaculation for sure, so decided not to do it there. I asked him to show me how to self catheterize. He showed me himself using size 16 Bard red rubber catheters, but he didn't tell me to wash my hands, and your fingers have to touch the part of those catheters that goes inside, so I had a severe UTI the next day. I went in a week later and, they wanted me to demonstrate that I could use a catheter, which I had trouble doing since I was new at it. They took me to the exam room where he used a rigid cystoscope on me, followed by forcing in foley catheter, which I had in for a week. I have been self catheterizing for 3 years since then without problems.

My experience with that office was not good and I can not recommend it to anyone else.

Wow, I have been reading this whole thread and have not seen anyone else who last their erections. I thought I was the only one. And yes, it was very painful for me too despite the numbed prostate. I feel like my Dr. must have done something wrong. I was worse off after the procedure than before. It's now more than 3 months and thank God I have no more foley and don't have to self cath but I think I always have around 400cc left over. I don't even think I have blockage. Probably didn't even have it to begin with. I think my real problem is a neurogenic bladder. It won't squeeze after a certain amount is emptied. But this Rezum took me backwards. I think what happened was they filled my bladder with water so they can see what they are doing during the procedure. I think my bladder got too full and stretched out too much and now lost some nerve connections. That is my theory at least.

The Rezūm procedure has made my life hell. I was very active with my wife sexually prior to this, but I now need to take a pill to help with ED. I've also experienced retroejaculation through the Rezūm procedure along with extremely painful urination, increased frequency and painful urgency. Not to mention the incredible amount of pain I feel in just urinating.

Thank you so much for posting this. I am just now 6 weeks out today. I can NOT get an erection. Before Rezum I had massive powerful erections and a great sex life. Now I can not even get or sustain an erection via masturbation, or with my wife's help. I am hoping and praying this will improve soon, but for now I am very afraid.

With masturbation, I am able to reach orgasm and I CLEARLY do not have RE, but i never become erect enough for penetration. My erection occurs just a few moments before climax, then is gone to completely flacid in less than 2 minutes.

Has ANYONE here experienced erectile dysfunction that came back?

I have a similar experience. I'm 90 days out and peeing more often now then ever. I had a slight ED every now and then but viagra took care of that, but now it's way worse. My orgasms would launch pretty impressively at times now they just kinda oooze. So Rezum killed my ejaculation pressure and did nothing for my urinary pressure. The inside of the head of my penis feels a little weird too kinda numb. Most noticeable when it's not fully erect.

Sane thing as me and I'm 90 days past surgery. If I take viagra I can get hard but it takes a lot longer. If I don't use the erection right away I'll loose it and it won't come back. If I masterbate I can get an orgasm even if not fully erect and just like you it gets harder just before orgasm. rrrrr

Here's my status: Got Rezum on June 4, 2021. Got a TURP in Feb of 2022. In the 8 or so months in between I had a Foley cath the entire time. Occasionally, they would remove it to do a voiding test and I ended up at ER at midnight twice to get another one put in because I was unable to urinate or self cath (I know how to self cath. Did it for over a year. I was unable to get it past my prostate and the pain in my urethra was unbearable).

A few months after my TURP, I was able to pee but only by using the valsalva technique where I have to strain like I'm pooping. Pee only comes up when I strain and stops when I have to catch a breath in between strains.

I think during the Rezum, my doctor overfilled my bladder to 1000cc and destroyed what little muscle tone I had left from 10 years of not being able to empty. I now have a neurogenic (flaccid) bladder that does not contract on its own anymore.

March 2023: Thanks to the TURP, I can actually empty (with about 10 - 20 minutes of straining). My penis is always in a shrunken retracted state. Even if I pull on it in the shower, I doesn't get semi hard anymore. I used to have good erections prior to the Rezum. The skin is crepey because there's less blood flow there now so it looks like wrinkled pantyhose. It's very hard to get an erection. Requires some work and porn and it can get to about 90% hardness but definitely not rock hard the way it used to. Viagra helps a little bit but still not fully hard. When it's flaccid (basically all the time unless I work at it), it's a pathetic sad skinny shrunken appendage. I wasn't big to begin with. This didn't help. Also, sometimes it feels cold to the touch and like Steve said, the head feels a little weird. Like missing sensation.

Ever since Rezume, I've been wondering how and why did this happen? The procedure itself was agonizing so here's my theory: I wonder if my doctor missed injecting my prostate altogether. Maybe he shot in the wrong area. The pain I experienced was probably my nerves getting steamed to death. It was not supposed to be that painful. Theory #2: At ❤️0cc, my prostate might not have been big enough for this procedure? #3: I'm pretty sure he over filled my bladder which was why I was unable to pee at all after the procedure. Prior to Rezume, I was peeing pain free about 60% of my capacity retaining 40%ish (maybe 200-300cc). After rezume 0%, and after TURP, my bladder can only squeeze out about 50cc before I have to employ straining technique.

While I'm so happy that I can fully empty my bladder and go for 4 - 6 hours between bathroom breaks, I really miss my old penis, hard and flaccid states.

One last minor issue which I'll just assume is the result of the TURP is 99% Retrograde. Like one drop will seep out after my orgasm, that's it. I do miss squirting though. On the upside, no mess to clean up.

Dam, that's a real horror story. I feel your pain. I have red a lot of the replies to this thread and it seems at least here, that the majority of patients getting Rezum haven't had the best results. I'm not sure if I can make a post here with a Poll but if possible I will so we can see the actual result status of all participants.
