REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

Posted , 385 users are following.

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM".  The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc".  You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up.  I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now.  I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday.  As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens.  Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them.  It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue.  My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

I had the Rezum procedure on Dec 28, 2017 (just over 1 month ago).  It was a painful procedure that I almost wish I had been put out for.  I also feel that my doctor made a mistake during the procedure.  He was trying to inject the steam in 4 locations of the prostate by using his tool through the urethra to inject the steam through the wall of the urethra into the prostate.  The injections were somewhat painful, but one of them was more painful than the others.  One of the injections seemed to backtrack all of the way back through the urethra and I commented at the time, "Wow! I could feel that one all of the way up."  I feel that he may have burned/damaged my urethra as it is getting more painful each day (even now), along with some painful spasms all the way up the penis.

As to the actual results of the treatment, I had a nightmare experience:  I was prescribed Percocet and given the instruction to take 1 to 2 pills every 4 hours, as needed.  Due to the pain (including lots of discomfort from the catheter) I took 2 pills every 4 hours for 12 hours (6 pills - 325/5).  I started developing a lot of lower abdominal pressure and bladder pressure.  This seemed strange due to the catheter which seemed to be working.  Then, I realized that I was getting severely constipated, and sick.  I threw up everything that I had recently eaten and developed a fever.  I though that I might be getting the flu.  I called up the doctors office to tell them of my problems, and they prescribed stool softeners and another, less constipative drug for the pain.  Being as we were on a holiday weekend (New Years), I was told to call if I had not had a bowel movement by Tuesday (4 days).  After several hours, I realized that it was only getting worse.

I decided to use a Fleet enema to help clear the constipation.  It only relieved some of the pressure due to a release of gas.  I took another enema the next day (Saturday) and was only able to clear a small amount of bowel material.  I was confused and though that maybe my problem was something else.  After a while, I decided to work on the constipation from the other end - Miralax and dulcolax.  This worked but I still had to push hard and finally cleared a lot of bowel material and relieved my bowel pain and bladder pain.

But, now the nightmare really began.  I had caused extreme stress to my hemorrhoids which caused them to thrombose and not retreat.  This meant, emergency Hemorrhoidectomy.  I'm still in recover from that surgery, and it looks like I will now be going back in for colorectal surgery.  And, the pain in my urethra is starting to increase.

The good news:  I definitely feel that my prostate has shrunk.  I can void my bladder on command.  It's been a decade since it worked this well.  I can sit through an entire movie and not have to leave.  And when the movie is over, success!  Not a painful trip home to try again to relieve my bladder.

Now, if my urethra will heal along with my rectum. believe it or not, it will have been worth it.  Fingers crossed!

      Hi David,

      Thank you for posting your experience;

I had my procedure done 1/23/2018 and for me it was a bearable procedure 3 out of the 6 treatments were painful but tolerable for me and the remaining 3 all I felt was a bubbling sensation.  Currently due to the swelling of the prostate I still can’t pass much urine and get into a crisis situation after removal of the catheter; catheter # 3 now.  Part of the first week I had a build up of bladder spasms that inflamed my already traumatized prostate. Going into the second week the spasms are gone and I only seemed to have irritation when I’m sitting, prostate must get compressed (thankfully I’m not overweight) . The only other thing about the catheter as mentioned by others are erections during the night a very unpleasant situation that wakes me immediately.

Peter your doctor was very aggressive I'm not going to say a word on that.  I hope he was straight with you on retro. With the catheter put a water base lube on the tube and around the tip of the penis.  When you get the erection it will slide better and it will not irritate the urethra Good luck  Ken

      Hi Kenneth,

I understand that it may have been aggressive, but I feel I won’t have any more issues than before the procedure.

My primary concern was to reduce the troublesome tissue and  maintain a healthy lifestyle and get off of finasteride which had little side effects for me.  Make best effort to control any future regrow of problem tissue. Since I’ve lived with RE sporadically for almost 10 years I know I can make the adjustment if the worst happens.

I keep the the catheter clean and lubricated all the time; the problem I have is pushing into the anchor when getting erection not so much a lack of lubricant.

Yes I know that can be a problem.  The only thing is why be aggressive when your prostate was only 50  I can see if it was 80 or a 100.  I just hope you know what your doing  Good luck  Ken

      Hi Kenneth,

It’s already done will see in the coming months if it was a bad decision. My current focus is to get the catheter out and stay out. My urine is finally clear not dark and cloudy and the bleeding has lessened a lot. Just need time for the swelling to go down enough to pee regularly. I honestly think I have nothing to worry about regarding the RE, the doctor is a very conscientious individual and has gone beyond to answer all my emails and make himself available to answer questions; he was upfront with all the possible side effects. I knew the risks just as I knew the risks of finasteride, but I pursued those courses of action. I appreciate your concern as I extend my concern for you; best of luck for the both of us.

I went through pretests for the Rezum procedure; i.e., cystoscopy, urodynamics, TRUS, etc, on 31 January 2018.  The procedure itself is scheduled for 01 March 2018.  One of the tests indicated the prostate to be 25 g.  Small, I know.  I attribute this size to the fact that I've been taking Avodart for ten years.  Having said that, I also realize the size of the prostate has a poor correlation to the severity of symptoms, and also to bladder outflow obstruction.  Case in point – nocturia is ten times per night.  The urologist, in whom I have total confidence, said that he would inject once per lobe; in other words – two total injections.  It’s out of anxiety that I ask.  Is nine seconds of injected steam per lobe too much for a prostate of 25 g?  As always, inestimable thanks.

Alan  that is very small prostate.  Are you having that much problems.   Why are you having a Rezum for a small prostate with all the side effects and risks.  Why not try the Urolift to open it up.  No side effects. Good luck  Ken

I know my urologist would resist suggesting a rezum procedure for a prostate that size. I realize as you mentioned size and symptoms have a weak connection. You are in the minimal range qualifying for rezum procedure but I would hope there were alternate options. I did see an episode on tv doctors where one of the host Dr had it done as in your case and they followed his progress; he was extremely pleased and retain full sexual function.

I saw that episode to but who know if that was true.  He did not say anything about having dry orgasms he only said that it did not inter fear with his sex life.  Ken  PS  We have had some good and some bad on here about Rezum.  I think it is going to come down to how good the doctor is when he is doing the procedure.
