REZUM--HAVE YOU HAD THIS DONE???????

I had a nice conversation today with the President of the "Urology Times". He was telling me that there is a "New Procedure" that has been approved called the "REZUM SYSTEM". The company that makes the system is called "NXThera, Inc". You can google them up and lots of stuff comes up. I called them for a referral and they gave me a Doctor in Minnepolis that has done it over 50 times now. I called his nurse and she said he would call me back and answer my questions on monday. As you guys probably know Doctors are not very good at returning calls but we'll see what happens. Iam not very good at explaining how the procedure works but basically they take the device and put it up the uretha and vaporize the prostate cells which kills them. It works with high pressure "steam" that at a certain degree will kill the prostate tissue. My question for you guys is there anybody out there that has had it done to them and how are you getting along and are there "side effects", etc etc?????

I had this procedure approximately three weeks ago. I was only given 1 zanex, 4 pain pills and 5 antibiotics. Was told to take one of each an hour before the procedure. I'm like "I'm a drinking man. 1 pain pill? Seriously. So there I was. Laying on the bed in my man stirrups with my junk hanging out in front of god and everyone. Wife standing off to the side taking pics saying things like "Facebook". A female nurse is there cleaning up the boys and another male nurse arranging pads around my junk like it was a floral arrangement. Then doc comes walking in "do you mind if I have a couple of other doctors observe. I'm like hell no, the more the merrier. Seriously? So we get started. I think they put some lidocane in the little guy and then shoved this thing in there. He got started and I think I levitated off that table. I turned white and broke out into a sweat like you wouldn't believe. I started complaining and heard ol doc say almost done. Then he said 30 seconds more. THIRTY SECONDS IS LIKE A LIFETIME!!!! Then they put in a catheter and sent me on my way. What a nightmare. This was on a Thursday and they said to come back Monday morning. Well Sunday the end of my penis hurt so bad from that tube. It felt like I was being cut with razor blades. Called my daughter and said to go get me some ky or something. She's like seriously dad. Then Sunday night about 1;30 in the morning I'm feeling something a little damp in bed. So I jumped out of bed, bad move, cap came off of the bag. P**s everywhere. There I am cleaning carpet, changing bedding, very not happy. So Monday morning I'm at the hospital Johnny on the spot to get this thing out of me. Then the nurse takes the bag off the hose and puts 150 ml of water into my bladder. Then is "take a deep breath" as she pulls this thing out of me. I think it was connected to my ass because it felt like every thing was coming with it. Then she said I want that water back. I'm like why did you put it in there if you wanted it back. She said you gotta pee. I was able to giver her back about 130 ml. She was good with that and off we go to work. Drank a lot of water during the day but was getting less and less pee back. Was a real struggle to pee. That night I was miserable. Had to pee real bad but couldn't. Only a couple of drops. The next morning back to the hospital. She put another catheter in and said come back Thursday. This time she gave me a night bag. I was like where was this the last time? So Thursday I'm back for the removal procedure, same dog and pony show. I was still having a hard time peeing. Was passing little bits of tissue from time to time. Went back for another check up and felt like my bladder was full. They did an ultrasound and said it was empty. Gave me another round of antibiotics and some little brown pills called Phenazopyridine 200mg three times a day. OMG, your pee turns to fluorescent radioactive stain anything it gets on fluid! Didn't notice any difference. So now, I am getting the urge to pee many many times a day. When I go it is very difficult to pass urine and a little painful. Thus far knowing what I know now, I don't think I would have went through this procedure. I spoke with another guy that had this done and he said he was happy with it. I'm still up 4 or 5 times a night and only pass a small amount of urine. I want to be able to write my name in the snow again. I do have prostate cancer as well. Erection problems too. I'm like aw come on. Getting old is not for the faint of heart!

Stephen, you poor thing. When my husband had it, I couldn't understand why he was able to walk in, but was not able to walk out, couldn't even stand. He wound up in the hospital, and is now in rehab trying to get his strength back. He also was a recovering stroke victim. Now from your description I can understand what happened to him. He also was given 2 pain pills an hour before the procedure. I think that the combination of the pills which he wasn't used to, and the trauma to the body, caused a setback to 2016 when he had the stroke. Joel also said that there was a lot of pain to the procedure. They kept the catheter in for 3 weeks, and it hurt when the nurse pulled it out. I personally think the patient should be put to sleep for the procedure. At least now it seems that Joel is recovering nicely. I hope there will be good days ahead for you.

Its not the norm, but sometimes it can take 3-4 weeks before you can pee decently after Rezum. It doesn't always correlate, but larger prostates tend to take longer to recover. But it was close to 3 weeks before I could pee at all and roughly 6 before i was better than before.
Here's what to expect. First, peeing out tissue is normal - that will happen for awhile. Second, peeing will come back slowly. Don't be surprised if it gets better for awhile and then not so good again - that happened to me. You'll dribble little bits at a time before you get a steady stream and that will come and go at first. Third, you will have a bloody urine phase that will last for 1-3 weeks. Don't worry about that - its normal unless you start seeing large clots. The good news is that I went through all of that but I'm glad I had Rezum done. The bathroom ran my life and it doesn't anymore,
You might want to ask your urologist to show you how to self cath and give you a script for some catheters. You shouldn't need them for long, but until you can pee semi-decently, they will be a godsend before bed and if you want to go out. They also make small pre-lubed ones (most on this site like Coloplast speedicaths) that you can hide in a pocket or sock if you need to use one away from home. Those foleys are very painful and make any normal activity difficult to impossible. I couldn't pee right for well over a month, but was back in the gym in a week thanks to self cathing. And yes, they should never do this to people while they are awake. Someone on an earlier thread (may have been on this one, I don't remember) said "they should replace waterboarding with Rezum." It can really hurt - on the last spray I screamed.

In my case I had 2 treatments per lobe, the treatment was a pain of 8 out of 10 or less for the first of each lobe. The doctor would ask each time when the pain hit if I needed time before he administered the next. I told him I wanted to just keep going and get it over with. The interesting thing for me was the second treatment for the lobe there was just a bubbling sensation and no pain.
The catheterization I had to have 3 times over a 15 day period because I could not urinate. The last day after removing the catheter I started to pass a stone and back into the hospital I went, but luckily it was only a 2mm stone. Later that evening I was released and some days later I passed the stone. It’s been around a month and a week since the procedure and I’m urinating without issues and have not experienced retrograde ejaculation.

You might want to consider learning how to do self catheterization and do it before you go to sleep and hopefully that will reduce your frequency of getting up at night.

Hello Stephen,
I am sorry for your troubles, but this is a beautiful write up. I had it in September. My results were pretty much by the book (paper). I feel much better. I have not been back. I swore that I would never let them stick another tube in my pee pee. I am supposed to go back on the 19th. I don't know if I will if I have to go through that. I wish you well and I hope that in time you will get the results that you desire.

I had this Rezum done 3 weeks ago. I am 62 and in general good health. I have had the enlarged prostate problem for a couple of years. Last year I finally got on a med called finasteride on the recommendation of my PA urologist. This year, because of the weird dreams the med was causing and the lack of good results on the getting up at night deal I searched and found the Rezum procedure. I had a new local Urologist that had just started doing Rezum but his count was 2 guys. I found a Doc just over an hour away that had done over 20 so he was my guy. They had me get 3 meds in advance to take 2 on procedure day and 1 was for pain if needed. I did not need it. I hit the gold mine with Doctor Kang in Monroe, NC. He sat down and told me everything to expect, we set the appointment and when I got in it went just as he said. I was in the room for less than an hour. The nurse did the prep with a local on the prostate and the tip. The Doc came in with a team (including the Rezum sales guy who actually helped). I do pretty well with pain but I brought a squeeze ball just in case I felt more than I would like (I use the ball to focus any pain or discomfort and focus it in the ball rather than feel it, it works for me). After all this is the first time I had a group hanging around this part of my body so I wasn't sure how that would go. But the Doc told me what was coming at each step he said I might feel the first "zap" but I only felt a slight tingle at the prostate but did not feel anything for the remaining 4 zaps. Overall I would say it was easy and quick. The actual zapping only took maybe 10 or 15 minutes. I did this on a Friday, they put a bag on me that also went easy. I came back on the following Monday and the bag came off really easy and went home. I did not believe it but the feeling of having a rubber band on the end of the Johnson went away on the third day post bag. So far the stream has been getting stronger and stronger. I still have some blood at the start of squirt as expected but that is less every day as well. I am surprised how fast it is working. Everything I heard even from my Doc was it takes months to see full benefit. So far this has been great and I know I will continue to improve but I am so glad to be off the finasteride!! I had a buddy to the Terp rotorouter deal and he was down for days and had a long recovery. I am not kidding, this was real easy considering where and what they were doing. Not that I want to but I know they only have 5 years of data to see how long it will last but I would do it again if needed. Find a Doc that has done many of them and is a good guy is the trick. Doctor Kang was the right Doc for me. Good luck to all with this problem!

Jack So happy you did the research and was happy with your doctor. Did your doctor talk to you about retro ejaculation. Did you ask him out of the 20 men he has done did you ask how many ended up with retro from the procedure. Or was this not a concern. Most of the doctor tell you it's only 4% but we have found that it is between 10 - 15 %. I am a little concerned that he did 5 injection. Hope your one od the lucky ones. Take care Ken

I had 6 treatments and no retro. The Dr I had said he stays away from the duct and the neck of the bladder both areas that effect ejaculation function. The duct does not cause retro it prevents any ejaculation; the bladder neck causes the retro because ejaculation is still possible but in the wrong direction hence the retro.

It sounds like yours worked as well as mine. I have had no complications. Just a couple of ER visits on that weekend after the procedure because the cath was clogging. Best wishes.
